A few people are having trouble with this.

Just do a search for NEC and have a read.

You can't search for NEC, its three letters, you can search the CO forum for the model number though.

It is a very fussy writer at first but I flashed mine and it now accepts a hell of a lot more media and I now use the Bulkpaqs which it writes perfectly every time, no coasters. I recommend it as long as you are comfortable with flashing it.

I wouldn't get it. The firmware you have to flash to your drive is hacked so who knows if your drive will burn out within a year or not. It's pretty sad when the only firmware for the drive that works well isn't released by NEC. Go with the retail Sony Dru510a or the OEM Pioneer 106.

Thanks for all the replys guys, very helpful

There is now an official firmware update that allows the drive to burn on Princo dye media, would this update make this drive any better to use ??

Thanks again

I got this drive about a month ago.....so far I am in love. Haven't made a coaster yet. Been thru a 25 spindle of Verbatim, several packs of memorex, and am currently going thru a 50 spindle of memorex that I got for $60......so far not a complaint....

I haven't any trouble with my 1300 at all because I am not a cheap skate and use good quality media, that is the truth, use good media and it will work perfectly, use cheap crap and you're asking for trouble

Just look on google for NEC 1300A Herries Firmware and download the latest firmware. the DVD Writer then will support almost any brand you throw at it

Well it doesn't have the best rating but it's decent if you know what you are doing.

Cheap is as cheap does :-)

But you can search for old topics as there isn't much new on them.

Not really worth buying one now seeing as how the price difference between it and the Pioneer is so minimal. (about $20 between the two OEM drives).
