Sorry guys if this has been asked before, but even though I scanned some of the post I still didn't come to a solid conclusion....
My question is:
If I upgrade to the latest "Official" 1.41 firmware from Pioneer (I have an A04 ) from 1.20 (yes I'm still using the original firmware the drive came with) will I be able to write at x2 speed on x1 media. Any comments on what discs work, what don't and in betweens will be of help.
Also is it easy to revert back to v1.20 if something went wrong.
Thanx in advance
Cheers

I use firmware v1.40 and have had no problems, but have heard of people having issues with x4 media as far as I know the A04 likes most media, but beware of crap, check this board to see what's hot and what's not.

I wouldnt upgrade with the official pioneer firmware if you want to write 2x on 1x discs because it wont let you. You need to find an hacked firmware to do this. Also writing 2x on 1x discs is bad news on anything apart from 1x ritek g03's.
You might want to think about upgrading to the latest, either official or not and using 4x media and burning that @ 2x. There not much difference in the price now between 1x and 4x.

I gought some 4x disks for the 1st time recently, HQ brand. These disks would not even burn with 1.41 firmware! I downgraded to 1.31 hacked version and all is good.... burn all day at 2x.:D

yes but the only problem when i was using the hacked firmware for 104 is that when I was using Stomp and if I wanted to record at 1xspeed on 1xmedia it wouldnt let me it would automatically default to x2 speed. Thats ok if you are using quality media but if you are a cheapskate like me and tend to use cheap media, recording at x2speed is not a good idea.
So I decided to upgrade from the hacked firmware to the official 1.41 firmware which will obviously only record x1 speed on 1x speed media. At least now I am guaranteed that my movies will be 100% on cheap media aswell.
