Can anyone recommend a good quality USB optical mouse, must be cheap and suitable for gaming.

Yep, I use both Microsoft and Logitech and both are as good as each other.

Avoid cheap optical mouses like the plague however tempting it might be! :D

Yeah most people I have talked to will also say that MS Optical Mouses are the way to go. They are only about $30 at OfficeMax and I'm sure you can find them for cheaper if you look around.
