I'm after a 300W (minimum) power supply, which one has the lowest noise level. My present system has one is made by mecury and is a bit noisy.

Cheers:round:

Go with Enermax or Antec, They are the best.

if you use that 7v mod. Isn't that just asking for trouble? cuzz if you need it, you prolly have a cheap PSU, slowing the fan can only make it cause sh*t? The reason I ask I gotta cheap 400w ATX PSU thats loud. But I've read about cheap PSU's frying mobo's and sh*t. If its a good product to use point me to a US vendor, preferably with a good shipping rate

Edit: Ohh, it prolly lowers the voltage so it doesn't need the fan speed, i dunno help me out??? lmk

Geez I hate that!

The guy asked for a power supply brand, not how to modify fan speed.

greeopti, as snatcher said, Enermax and Antec are reputed as being the leaders.

If you aren't sure where to get them cheap, post back with the country you are in and someone here will get you a good price.

Insomniac, we have been through this before. Sometime their are different ways to approack a question. And many answers.

I read the question and understood that greeopti had a loud PSU, and needed a quiter one. I had the same problem and instead of buying a new silent £50 PSU i modded the loud one and saved a lot of money

greeopti might not of known about this and might be greatfull to of been given that advice. But it is only advice, i can see clear advantages to buying a new silent PSU, and at the same time advantages to modding it.

BRUINSrock, lowering the voltage on the fan also lowers the fan speed, hence less noise, however the airflow will also decrease, so it will get hotter. In my case this was not a problem as i have very good cooling. However a simple idea to move more air through it is to, put a system exaust on the back of it. as theses are almost silent, and seem to move a lot of air. this would make the air flow equal to what it was before the mod. If your feeling adventrous then you could cut a blow hole in the top of the case, and attach the system exaust to take cold air from that, saw it done once and it worked very well

greeopti, this is only an option, if you dont fully understand the risks of opening your psu then please dont do it!

Lowering the fan voltage is certainly one option, but not one that I would take. Apart from the reduced flow rate you do increase the chances of the fan stalling, especially with a fan that is well used.

My PSU just happens to be noisier than normal

cheers

Q technology is also a good quiet one, or Zalman.

Anyone else who supports lowering fan speed!

Why anyone would contemplate doing this is beyond me? Lowering fan speed means lower cooling and power supplies like other things, have an ideal operational temperature. Keeping in mind that almost everything in your pc relies on your power supply, and you are risking a hell of a lot!

Why not apply some light machine oil to the fans bearings?

Why not just replace the fan?

The answer is because this has nothing to do with fixing a problem, but with tinkering with things?

greeopti, all the brands mentioned so far are good as well as top power etc.

Personally, I think the best way is to get a new PSU, as long as it is a decent quality one like the units mentioned above.
