Well it all depends on if you are talking about the PC or XBOX, PS2, ect? Halo gets really high marks and is due out for the PC really soon or if you have an XBOX then you can already pick it up. There are a number of older ones that I could mention but as far as new ones go, HALO is about as good as it gets.

Also Black Hawk Down on the PC, but you must have Broad Band to compete.

Soldier of fortune 2 is pretty good, and is even better if you're going to be playing online. i thought halo sucked on pc, it runs slow even on a p4 2.4/1gb ram.

Battlefield 1942 is so addicting, with the desert combat patch you can play with real life up to date weapons of the US and Iraqi militaries.

Unreal Tournament 2003 (prabally has the best graphics out of any FPS) and Battlefield 1942 is also another good one.

My top 3 choices would have to be:
1. Counter Strike (challenging and good multiplayer replay value)
2. Rainbow Six: Raven Shield (Simply amazing amount of guns)
3. Soldier of Fortune 2: Double Helix Gold (face paced challenging shooter)

These games have plenty of servers and players to keep them alive even after the game is old. See how CS is still here playing and alive after so many years amazing!

Other I would recommend are:
Battlefied 1942
Quake III: Arena

I didn't like these first player shooters too much:
Unreal Tournament 2003
MOHAA (too sluggish for me)
Alien VS Predator

But, I'm really looking forward to Counter Strike Zero and not so much Half Life 2. I think HL is retarded, shooting aliens is boring but, if that's what you like then get HL2, graphics are amazing but, shooting aliens? Blah, after Valve got their engine stolen from hackers they could probably make better games with the source coding like Iraqi's VS US lol as the article said somewhere I read online.
