I just had a quick look at SA's adsl service, what a rip off! Telkom must be mad to charge those prices - they are making sure that SA is way behind the rest of the world. Anyway rant over about the money hungry blood merchants :)
If you use isdn 128kb/s you get an improvement, but will then pay for 2 channels (I assume telkom does not offer unmetered services). A single 64kb/s will probably give you an improvement, as there will be fewer disconnects and slow downs - but the top end speed will not be a drastic improvement.

Thanks for the advice - You are so right about Telkom ripping us off...for everything ...not just ADSL. Check out www.myadsl.co.za for some adsl owners gripes and groans. I was contemplating getting that, but the cost is waaaay to high....and I've heard too many complaints. The most economical thing for me would be ISDN 64kbps....
Can you give me a realistic download improvement I would get? Currently, my 56K max's out at around 5-6Kbs....depending on the site I'm downloading from and browsing is pretty fast.
Thanks again

You will only get a small increase with 64K (downloads of 7 to 7.5 kilobytes per second at most). But the service definately more reliable than the normal dialup - or at least it was 2 years ago. Far less disconnections and fewer slow downs at peak times.
I the UK I have a home connection of 1Mbit/s down and 250Kb/s up with no connection fees for R570 per month (and no stupid 3gig cap). I may miss the weather but not Telkom

lol @ not missing Telkom! hehe. I was expecting a bit more out of ISDN that 7 - 7.5kbs. Was hoping for between 10 and 15kbps. Guess I was asking for too much.
R570 is dirt cheap for the kind of connection you have. I'm looking at spending R350 a month on ISDN including ISP fees and the rental on the line. Add to
that dialup calls and I could very well be approaching R600 a month for ISDN ;-( That sucks, but there's nothing much I can do. 56K is costing me around R350
a month with calls, so I just may as well spend the extra bucks and get ISDN. If that does'nt work for me, then I'll just go back to 56K.
Thanks for all the advice.

Just another opinion needed from you guys. I need to get an ISDN modem and thinking of getting the Billionton USB 128K ISDN model. (USB 128-B) Do you guys have any opinions on these modems?
