Matrix_581 Oct 07, 2003, 04:44 PM dvd shrink is better then dvd2one
CCE = Cinema Craft Encoder, amazing video encoder is much better then shrink but takes longer and is a harder process
nimbles Oct 07, 2003, 04:47 PM dvdshrink cos its free and gives you much more scope to compress different parts at different rates, where as dvd2one only lets you compress everything at the same rate- quality between the two if you didn't mess with dvdshrink automatic compression ratios- i'd give it slightly to dvdshrink
CCE- cinema craft encoder- is the best for quality because it will compress using multiple passes but this takes ages- depnding on how many passes you make. It is very much more involved though so if you are newbie i wouldn't even consider it for a while- you have strip out the audio stream and re encode the video into a dvd compliant mpeg2 file and then reauthor the whole thing.
dvdshrink (free), dvd2one (not free) instant copy 8 (not free) are the ones i'd suggest you try first before contemplating moving onto CCE.
I personally use dvdshrink for low compression (like if the file is around 5gb and IC8 for anything else (but IC8 does take around 2 hours to reencode a a 6gb dvd on the highest quality settings- and doesn't produce a nice VIDEO_TS folder to burn with your burning software of choice e.g. nero or stomp - you'd either need to use its own in prgram burning software or use a program called PDI-tool or i read somehwere that the new release of Daemon tools has pdi support as well)
CCE is the best probably if you going for all out quality, but
a) it costs alot ( i think over $1000)
b) does take a long long time- requires several other programs depending on which method you choose
c) unless you have a very good av setup you are not really going see the difference
getmethis Oct 07, 2003, 05:07 PM thanks guys i think dvdshrink is the way 2 go
cheers

jesterrace777 Oct 08, 2003, 03:49 AM Absolutely. DVD Shrink produces amazing results (just as good, if not better, than DVD X COPY Xpress). Also the new DVD Shrink does have a deep analysis option which does take longer but significantly improves the quality.
Indiana Jones Oct 08, 2003, 10:19 AM Been talking about me have we lol I only mentioned using CCE because it does give the best results and I feel that for the Indiana Jones Trilogy it deserves the best quality, not just a 30min convert through DVD Shrink, people who think that the quality that DVD2one produces is the same as CCE produces are very much mistaken.
handyguy Oct 08, 2003, 10:52 AM Ahem, be sure its dvdshrink 2.3 or 3 Beta.....
Yesterday I did a dvd with dvdshrink & it took 140 minutes but with dvdxcopy, 25 minutes. btw, that was a 800mhz computer.
getmethis, if you gave your system specs we could have told you what works on your machine & operating system.

Yeah but you probably did a deep analysis with DVD Shrink if it took that long and the quality on the Deep Analysis projects is noticeably better than DVD X COPY Xpress. I notice that with high levels of compression that X Copy Xpress tends to have a bit of a grainy look to it but if I use a Deep Analysis with DVD Shrink it is almost unnoticeable. So it all depends on what type of results you are looking for. Also were you using V2.3 or V3.0 beta? I use 3.0beta if the movie requires high levels of compression (that and V3.0 has the Deep Analysis option which makes a fairly big difference), if I reauthor I use V2.3 as V3.0 seems to have some weird quirk with the reauthor feature.
GoBlue34 Oct 09, 2003, 10:13 AM How do you choose "deep analysis?" Didn't see it in the settings...
nimbles Oct 09, 2003, 11:11 AM when you click on back up- tick the "perform deep analysis" box
you can do the deep analysis first (theres a massive button saying "analysis" next to the "back up" button) but i wouldn't bother takes about 20 minutes roughly- might as well let it do the deep analysis and the encoding in one go then you can leave the computer and go and watch tv.
once the deep analysis is done once you don't need to do it again
this is only in the newer versions of dvd shrink (3 beta 1 and above) not in 2.3.
