Sorry about my last post about this question. I wrote it really really late.

What I really want to know is, I have searched the board, but cannot find a compatiblility list of some sort.

I have a Version 1 PS2, and my DMS3 is on the way in.

Will a DVD+R backup work? Or DVD-R? or either.

I know this chip is compatible with both, but does that mean it doesn't matter what I use to make PS2 backups?

Thanks jesterrace777 for you answer, I guess I really want to know why you can't use DVD+R's on all games but some and assuming you have a good quality brand media, what percentage of games will not work if they are copied to a DVD+R?

Certain brands of media use better dyes which are easier for the laser to read. Cheap media=Cheap dye. BTW you misunderstood. It's not the game itself but the actual PS2's ability to read + format discs. PS2s seem to get along better (in general) with quality DVD-R media than DVD+R. It has to do with how the disc is authored I believe. Anyways on an older PS2 (like yours) DVD+R is trial and error (may or may not work no matter what brand of media you use). DVD-R on the other hand will work as long as the media is a good quality (brands I suggested elsewhere, Ritek, Verbatim, Fujifilm).

Thanks so much jesterrace 777. You have been a big help.

I completely understand now.

I wish I could understand my other post for my Version 2 disassembly question (http://www.cdrom-guide.com/cgi/Ultimate.cgi/showthread.php?s=&threadid=259767) Guess there aren't many that now much about the "older" versions.

Hi jesterrace777,

I believe I have the same problem as durst2, I think....
I have one of the first PS2-consoles with a Action Replay chip.
I have tried to copy a game 1:1 on to a DVD+R, but for some reason the PS2 does not read the game...
Can it be that this has to be a DVD-R???

Thats exactly what the problem is m8, Anything under a V4 is highly unlikely to be able to read +R media.

Yup although it could also be an issue of media. Like DVD-R if you aren't using a good brand then you can run into trouble. If you have a + format only writer though I would sell it on ebay and pick up a new dual format Pioneer 106 (writes to both -R and +R at 4x) You can pick it up in the UK for 100 pounds including VAT from www.blankdiscshop.co.uk or if you are in the US you can pick up the same drive for $133.49+free ground shipping from www.avlogic.com

Hi, guys

I've tried to burn a DVD-R of the game GTA Vice City, but for some reason the PS finds a CD when I put in the DVD+R but cannot play, and when I put in a DVD-R, it simply doesnt even find a disc... So, also unable to execute.

Now, when I'm making a 1:1 image in Nero, is there a special setting where I have to pay attention to??? Or is this a game that can't be backuped???

BTW the DVD-R was a Sentinel and the DVD+R was a Verbatim.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong ???

Sounds like a media problem if it dosen't recognise it, Never heard of sentinel DVD-R so cant comment, But all versions of PS2 will read good quality -R media, Try using ritek or verbatim dvd-r

Yup, if you use cheap media you will probably run into problems. Try a quality DVD-R disc (Ritek, Verbatim or Fujifilm).

Under v4 has the issues. A Dvd-R disc from Fujifilm is probably the best option.

Is Fujifilm still using the Ritek dye or is it Taiyo Yuden?
