My 10 year old grandson bought an old computer at a yardsale. It has a 386 processor and runs on windows 3.1. Is it possible to add a
CD Drive to this or to upgrade the Windows program?

If it has any spare CDROM bay slot free on the front of the computer, yes you should be able to add a CDROM drive, but as its a 386, I think anything over Windows 95 may not work (or that well), not to mention you may have problem finding memory as some can take the old SIMM/EDO memory types.

Don't run out and purchase a new CD-Rom for it. See if you can find an old CD-Rom drive as the price of buying a new drive that might not even run on the system is not a good investment. You might get Windows 95 running on the system but the cost of upgrading it is prohibitive. How much RAM is currently installed. He will need at least 16MB to run Windows 95. Upgrading it to 32MBs would be better. But the cost of RAM will be high. Then there is available hard drive space. Some of these old systems had very small drives. It was not uncommon to see 150MB - 500 MB drives (or even less). A basic install of Windows 95 takes around 90 MBs so he needs a bit of space.

Personally I'd let him play around learning DOS and Windows 3.1
