Dave2986 Nov 10, 2003, 06:45 AM Ok im sick of carring round 50 floppy discs with all my work on.
i have a memory key that i cant install the driver for on windows 98 as every time i try to install it i get a message saying restricted systerm admin access only (this also come up when you try to download exe's and install anything elses)
i have asked the admin loads of time to put the driver on the network but they wont, or cant as their really crap
I could just about cope last year as some of the network has XP so i could just copy the work onto my user area, but now my user area does not work in half the building as one of the servers broke and it ant going to be fixed
The network is running novel 4.xxx and 3.xxx
thanks
gooner Nov 10, 2003, 07:26 AM There isn't much you can do mate, all the rights will be coming from the relative container your user object is in or from a inheritance rights filter. The only place that you should be able to save it is the Z: / H: / or S:But it appears that there is a Novell Workstation policy in effect that will still prevent you from installing the drivers.
Need to pester the admins more
Dave2986 Nov 10, 2003, 09:23 AM thanks for the info gooner
ill tell you what we've just had that you might like
its a swipe card system, thats used to activate and reset passwords for your user accounts, you swipe your user id card (that everyone has) which has a barcode on and it prints out a piece of paper, with a password on and a nice message
However there is a few problem with this system
1) the ID cards are all printed using a special card printer at the start if the year, but the barcode on 90% is unreadable as its all blured
2) the barcodes are generated using your student number, but you can download barcode software to generate theses numbers, and print them off. this will cause the problem of people who know peoples student numbers generating the barcode swiping it and reseting someone elses password
3) no one but me (including the staff) seems to have a clew how to log into novell, as on every pc it automaticly logs on as the the defult user name when you start each PC (not the ones in the IT dept though)
gooner Nov 10, 2003, 12:27 PM That is a weird setup, when I was at HSBC they had fingerprint Novell logins for users, just use your fingerprint on it and hey presto - We had them on eval and the directors and all liked them that much they got them in, good at first but a bit of a mare in the end
duffy90210 Nov 10, 2003, 12:34 PM Gonner, I guess HSBC cancelled the contact after more and more staffs lost or forgotten to bring their fingers to work ? ;)
Dave, I guess the reason why your admins are not too hot on Novell is due to the major changes from version 3 to version 4, the NDS while a good idea, were too much of a learning curve for some admins, so off to NT ship they went, hey, everyone knew Windows :)
If your workstation has local copy of Windows on a local HDD, have you tried to unplug the cable before boot up, if it cant see the NDS tree, no policy may kick in, been years since 3 and 4, so I am just guessing here.
HTH
gooner Nov 10, 2003, 12:40 PM You are right there Duffy - the move from 3 - 4 was a bit too much, a lot more friendly now - As for the removing the cable trick, yep that used to work, surprising how many people cottoned on to it (User wise that is)
Dave2986 Nov 11, 2003, 12:10 PM tried removing the cable guys, no luck :(
duffy90210 Nov 11, 2003, 01:55 PM Dave, do you know which server you are logging onto and what client version you are using ?
Dave2986 Nov 15, 2003, 12:02 PM sorry for the lateness of the reply duffy, for some reason every time i try to load any cdrg thread i get a security error and the screen closes, somthing to do with the submit reply button i think as it also sayes unde it "check message lenght"
very annoying as if you do it 3 times i get locked out for 2 mins
Im not sure which server im logged onto, in the area that im having problems, but i do know that they are changing the server soon to bros 1 on dudley_students
also we are using novell version 3.33
gooner Nov 15, 2003, 09:46 PM Novell Version 3+ is very very old - it is very rarely used now - But if you are usin vers 3/4 Duffy's advice should work
crash-cyberdrive Nov 16, 2003, 08:08 PM I do know a way, and I've tested it
when you type your id and pass at the same moment you hit enter disconnet the lan cable from the lan card, that will override all security settings and therefore you will have full access.
