To be honest if you want to make the most of newsgroups a premium news server is a big advantage, but if your learning most ISPs give access to newsgroups.
Here's a couple of links that I have for free news servers, can't say what they're like though.
Freenews (http://freenews.maxbaud.net)
Free2Seek (http://www.free2seek.com/free/newserver.shtml)

If your ISP gives you access to newsgroups (most do, but a few may not carry binarie groups) that's definitely the best place to start.

Here's (http://www.timdoc.com) a tutorial on using newsgroups.

There is a learning curve to using newsgroups, but if you stick with it you'll find it worth the small effort involved.
Good Luck,
HTH.

On the toolbar of newsbin pro you will see an icon marked "Server" in the server dialogue box insert the name and addy of you news server, if you're using your ISPs news server you should be able to get the info off their website, but the server will be something like "news.servername.com", when you've completed those details close the box, now hit the "Group" icon in the box that opens hit the button marked "Download Groups" newsbin will then download all the newsgroups that's on you server (could take a while, depending on your connection speed), you will then see a list of all the groups available (anything upto about 42,000) select a group and tick the selection box, click "OK" to close the groups box, in the "Groups/Servers" window you will see the newsgroup that you selected, double click it and newsbin will download the headers for that group.

NewsBin is a good binarie downloader with plenty of usefull features, too many to describe now but the above info should atleast get you started.

Here's (http://www.newsbin.com/nb4/help/QuickStart.html) the quick start help page for NewsBin pro.

If you can say who your ISP is some one here may be able to help with the info, alternatively you could contact your ISP and ask for the information needed to set up a news reader (their news server name and news server address).
I think using your ISPs news service is the best way to start.

If you want multipart binaries forget free servers www.giganews.com are good and reasonably priced when you look at what some people sell so called 0sec/0day ftp for your better off subscribing to a decent news server

xnews is a good reader it supports yenc and is easy to use.
