going to buy the kids a cheap cdg player from sainsburys.(alba). can i play copied discs on them?also if i buy the dvd discs on here with 1000 odd karaoke tracks on,will they play straight away or would i have to burn them onto cdr??..........cheers.

Check the sticky post at the top regarding makes/models of dvd players that play cd+g discs, copies are the same as originals. I personally find the Compacks to be the best, so far.

its actually a standalone cdg player and i can`t find anything in the sticky about it.

the alba is as you say a standalone player mate, however it is limited in what else it can do. the players mentioned in the sticky give you more options re formats. for the most part they will play CD+G, VCD and DVD all of which are karaoke formats, they are mostly region free machines and are not fussy about what you put in them i.e. perfectly good discs which the alba will not read or will play with scrambled graphics will play fine in one of them.
