scartcable Nov 25, 2003, 05:16 PM Hey guys
Im thinking of buying a stand alone dvd recorder so i can record vhs, satelite, dvd etc onto recordable dvdr.
Im from uk so can anyone suggest tell me what the cheapest model would be please i want it to be able to record dvd-r and dvd+r any help would be great
thanks
jesterrace777 Nov 25, 2003, 05:41 PM No such thing as a dual format standalone (to my knowledge anyways). The best models for the money are the ones made by Panasonic (DVD-R, DVD-RAM).
psibob84 Nov 25, 2003, 09:49 PM as jester said i dont think there is a standalone that can do + and -
but get the panasonic DMR-E50 its a good price standalone that can use both - and ram disks.
if you use ram disks to burn you can do all the basic editing and menuing on the standalone

I agree with the above myself, the advantages of a recorder that can also do DVD-RAM outweigh all the cheaper models for me. ;)
whizzersmith Nov 26, 2003, 04:08 AM Cheakout www.multiregionmagic.co.uk got mine from there m8, only £249, they did also have refurbished stock for £219 with 12 months warranty, bargin !, also bigpockets have Ridata Double Sided 9.4Gb DVD-RAM £5.49
There is a problem with trying to convert nstc vsh to pal dvdr, the baseline shifts up, this means you will need a baseline corrector, beware this will cost about £200 from www.lektropacks.co.uk
A bug buster will cost anything from £20 to £60 m8
sorry first link had a , init now works

I didn't know you could do that cause of macrovision coming on sometimes. They don't let you copy copyrighted stuff with then in the usa. You need to do something about that first.
Kermit Nov 27, 2003, 09:18 AM Sony makes a standalone DVD recorder (RDR-GX7) that does +RW, -RW, and -R, but it is expensisve (~$700).
handyguy Nov 27, 2003, 11:30 AM LiteOn actually makes a recorder too, $244 in some online stores.
I see it at bestbuy today, $199, free shipping, with IIEE port. cool.
Lite On Progressive-Scan DVD+R/RW Recorder with Digital Video Link
Model: LVW-5001
jeepers94 Nov 27, 2003, 01:08 PM I have the Sony RDR-GX7 + and - recorder.It is not cheap,mine was $550,but it is better built than most others,including the Panasonics.
hollie.weimeraner Nov 28, 2003, 06:40 AM I have a DMR-E30 and so far it has recorded everything I've wanted to from SKY. I do know that SKY encrypt some of the pay per view films but then you wouldn't be able to record those on anything. If you want to backup bought DVD's then thats another matter and the best way to do that is via a PC. Everything you need to know is in the DVD forum.
My view is go with Panasonic I don't know of anyone that has regretted it.
(standing by to be shot down in flames over that last comment! LOL)
handyguy Nov 28, 2003, 11:04 AM I have an e30 too...price has stayed high for a couple of reasons, one it has tons of input/outputs & two cause it has more buttons on the front than their newer models, eg e50, so you don't need the remote to operate your e30. spiffy
aaronjon Nov 28, 2003, 07:03 PM i`ll go with the panny`s on this, got an e30, but you can record sky box office movies on a sky plus hdd box, and watch another sky channel whilst doing so.(so if it stores in/on for later it can store out/on lol.)
handyguy Nov 29, 2003, 10:44 AM Some e30s have an black level bug but I dont have it. you play the dvd you did on it on another player & its lighter.
