shabba_d,
they had massive DNS problems last night which doesn't show as resolved on their service status page at the moment, so maybe still having problems.

NTL had problems last night due to their DNS servers being down/inaccessible. I was able to connect to the net using IP addresses (where known) but I was unable to connect using the www URLS.
Yes you probably deleted your settings for nothing.
BTW does anyone know where NTLs DNS servers are located?
This problem has now been resolved, according to NTL.

I first posted this on my own site but I have copied and pasted it here for your convenience;
Hmm on a more serious note The register published this (http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/34204.html) on wednesday. I contacted the register to explain to them that NTLs problem was a DNS problem.
On Thursday The Register published this (http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/34242.html)
Now the interesting part of this publication is the part about Zonealarm causing the problem because of DNS lookups. What NTL failed to say was that, according to my router logs, it was their DNS servers that was attempting to connect to computers, through various ports, that probably caused the lookups by Zonealarm. This obviously begs the question; why was the 1st NTL DNS server attempting to connect to computers through various ports?.....Well the obvious answer would be that it had been hacked.
I have now contacted the register with this information so we will see what they manage to dig up.
