I need it to record movies and to back up my music...etc. Need one that has a pretty good burn speed, has a decent price, and is compatible with blank media other than the company's that manufactured the burner as i have heard quite a few problems with that. Hope to get some replys soon, thanks :)

Okay the burners that I would recommend would be the Pioneer 106/A06 or the Sony Dru510A both are great and can be had for $150 or less. They burn at up to 4x which means that you can burn a full 4.7GB DVD-R disc in 15-16 minutes. Both are pretty flexible with media compatibility but as always I will stress going with a quality disc as they are getting almost as cheap as the "cheapo" discs and will give you fewer compatibility problems with your standalone DVD Player(s).
