Well I am trying to reformat my dad's computer for him but am running into a problem. I haven't started anything yet because I cannot get it to make a boot disc. When ever i go to Add/Remove Programs then to the boot disc tab and start to make a disc it gives me error messages saying it cannot find the files and to insert the windows 98 cd-rom. After doing so and searching the cd the files are no where to be found. I'm lost. I have no clue why the files would not be there. The ones I am having the most problems with are
winboot.sys
autoexec.ebd
config.ebd
and some more .ebd files

Please help me. This PC is in dire need of a reformatting but without the boot disc I am afraid I'll screw something up.
Thanks

also I was wondering how hard it would be to upgrade to XP home after formatting the hard drive.

If you have an XP disc you can just boot from the CD, it will take care of formatting for you so long as you tell it to do a clean install - as a rule of thumb its better to clean install XP than to upgrade from a previous OS.

If you don't have the CD yet ... you can get a windows 98 boot disk from bootdisk.com (www.bootdisk.com).

If you have any problems in the future with missing or corrupt system files in Win98, you can use the System File Checker located in Start-->Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->System Information, and then under the tools menu.

As far as "upgrading" to XP, it's just a matter of setting the bios to boot from CD and rebooting with the XP CD.

What's more important is to first check on the M$ site to make sure your hardware is compatible and to have ready drivers suitable for XP.
