View Full Version : Dual DDR - I know it's simple, but it's nagging me

Don't ya just love Christmas?! If ever there was an excuse to spend silly money on over priced components to build a nice and fast PC, Christmas IS that excuse!

Anyways, to the point. I will shortly be recieving a shiny new Abit IC7-MAX3 (Yeah, the one with the OTES!! Whatever that is!! :gabby: ). But the one thing I want to be sure of is that I don't need two sticks of DDR RAM.

It says it supports Dual DDR 400, but does that mean I can still run a single stick? It's just been bugging me. I'm fairly confident but I want to be sure before I spend my moola on some serious bits of kit.

(For those interested, I'm looking at a stick of Corsair 512MB XMS3200 Pro DDR, you know the new ones with the LED's on top to show you the memory usage. Yes, simple things, simple minds... :hdspin: )

Will work fine Memphis. Single or dual. But Why not get the dual (unless money is a factor)? If you plan on making it dual channell in the future you cant buy the other stick and make it dual, They come sold in pairs.

Yeah, money is a slight factor, I want to pay for good kit, but I don't have an unlimited supply of cash. Was thinking I could could buy one now, wait till my birthday in a couple of months for another excuse to get another stick and I've got my eyes on a 9800 too.

Good to know I can run a single stick fine though, cheers Mr Snatcher m8.

No problem, I have the Abit IS-7, slightly below yours, ran single 512 ddr 3200, then bought kingston hyperx dual channell pc 4000, Man huge difference. I am flying.

lol, yeah thats the intention. I'm going all out to build the fastest rig I can within my 'budget' (Yeah, like I actually have one!). This new Corsair RAM ain't cheep so I can live with one 512Mb stick for a little while.

have you checked out Kingston's HyperX RAM? CL=2 unlike most of its competitors with CL=2.5 and likely a bit cheaper. The Dual Chan RAM really is worth the extra $$$. :)

Ah, but does it have flashy lights on it?! :gabby:

420, that corsair stick that Memphis described does have CL 2. In fact, corsair is known for their ultra low timings, expecially in their twinx series.
