cybernet Dec 11, 2003, 04:43 PM hi,
seems its time to upgrade my pc after 4 years,
my current system is:
athlon 1200 thunderbird
300 mb sdram
40 gig hdd
32 meg graphics card
heres what it will be once ive upgraded:
athlon 2500+ (overclocked to 2800+)
1gb ddr ram
120 gig hdd
ati radeon 9600 pro graphics card (overclocked)
what ya all think? nice fast system ?
Memphis Dec 11, 2003, 04:51 PM Not bad at all. Could be faster but hey who's counting clock speeds these days?
Virgin San Dec 11, 2003, 09:05 PM Well if your old system was good enough for you for 4 years then the new one should be just fine. BIt of overkill on RAM IMHO, but admittedly it won't do any harm
Derrick Dec 12, 2003, 01:31 AM Stuff I can dream of! Im still sitting on P4-1500@1800. Geforce 2 MX and a 20GB hard drive which DESPERATLEY needs to be replaced!
Mr Snatcher Dec 12, 2003, 09:32 AM not too bad.

Just out of curiousty, did they make that 4 years ago?
I don't recall processor speeds @ 1200, 40 G HD, and 32 MB video cards being developed or available in 1999.
Anyone know?
Just curious and bored, that's all. :)

I dont think so either. I bought my first pc at the end of 98 and it was a 300mhz amd. Than after that fastest I saw was a 600mhz.

ElaineM Dec 12, 2003, 11:32 AM You might want to consider getting two smaller hard drives, perhaps two 60 or 80 GB. Many members seem to be having a lot of problems with the larger drives dying after a relatively short amount of time.

Yea, I kinda of noticed that myself, but thought it was just me. That probably explains why they are so affordable now.

Sadly, I am one of those people :(.
Hippie Dec 12, 2003, 03:57 PM I'm running:
Asus A7N8X2 mobo
Antec Blue 350W PSU w/ dual fans
XP2400+ Thoroughbred @ 133Mhz w/ Thermaltake Volcano 9 80mm fan & heatsink.
512Mb PC2700 DDR (single stick) @ 333Mhz
WD 7200RPM 40 Gb HDD Master
WD 7200RPM 80 Gb HDD Slave
ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder 128 Pro ( I'm not a gamer so it's all I need, it's been in my 2 previous PC's and I really like it. )
Audigy2 ZS Sound Card
TDK (Lite-On) CD/RW
Lite-On DVD/RW ( JUST installed )
XP Pro
There are faster but I'm happy with it.

Just thought I'd offer my combo as an example of something "similar" to what cybernet was considering. I meant it as an acknowledgement that I thought his combo would be a pretty nice piece. Seemed like a good idea at the time. Guess not eh ?

If you having 1GB of memory then wouldnt it be worth going for a processor around the 3ghz mark???
Just a idea thats all.
Insomniac Dec 13, 2003, 11:10 AM GSM, what's your logic behind that?
Please don't tell me that a faster processor will be able to use the memory better. (Someone will).
And why that magical number 3?
With the right motherboard and the bios finetuned, there would be little noticeable difference, if any.
The author only states "nice fast system", not a supercomputer.

GSM Super Star Dec 13, 2003, 11:14 AM Like I said just an Idea!
If the memory is above average why not spend the little extra on the processor too.
At then end of the day im only saying what I would do not what he has to do LOL

There's no point in running memory on a faster bus speed than your cpu, 99% of the times it causes nothing but problems.
kashmirez Dec 13, 2003, 04:11 PM Something else to consider to speed the system up is Raid 0. Don;t know if you're MB comes with it but it would go nicely with the suggestion earlier about getting smaller disks. Just get 2 of them :-)
Insomniac Dec 13, 2003, 05:07 PM This guy is going to end up with the IBM supercomputer by the time everyone finishes with him.
Virgin San Dec 13, 2003, 07:27 PM  This is why I gripe about people giving irresponsible advice :)
cybernet Dec 13, 2003, 09:06 PM lol @ Insomniac :) supercomputer i wish mate lol
thanks for your help and advice guys,
the more posts the merry, its nice to read on other people opinions ;)
just bought my radeion atlantis 9600 pro
still waiting to get my cpu/mem/ so im still concidering options on which ones im going to decide on.
ElaineM made a good point, 2 seperate drives, i had a 60 gig seagate a year back, the drive was full with all my stuff etc, then the drive died later found out the needle inside had worn out, so that put that to that.
i was going to buy 1 big drive, but now im going to go with ElaineMs advice buy 2 seperate drives.
this pc will be mostly used for gameing, and like i said earlyer ive bought my graphics card but its not concrete on which athlon+ cpu or how much ddr ram im going to stick in this baby.
it needs to be a fast machine.
Demo Dec 14, 2003, 07:56 AM An interesting point by ElaineM and backed up by Mr Snatcher and Memphis.
Perhaps this is why the guarantee has dropped from 3 years to one year on many/most drives. It may well be worth making sure that you only buy HDs with a 3 year guarantee.
