When my PC is booting it sometimes only sees 256 of RAM. I have a single 512 chip.
Got an MSI mobo and a AMD 2100 xp running XP.
Anybody got any ideas...

Try moving the RAM sticks to different slots. It may also be bad RAM or compatibility issue.

the bios sometimes sees it as 256 and other times as 512, there doesnt seem to be any pattern.

win98 and windows millenium only can run so much memorry and can't recognize the extra memmorie,Windows 2000 and windows xp should show you the 512mb of memmory,I think millenium and 98 only recognize 333mb,not sure,Something like that though..

I am not sure where you got your figure of 333MB from, this number doesnt even fit any of the memory range for an OS.
Win9X can work with 768MB of memory, anything above that, you will need your VCACHE settings modified or the OS will simply hang as it has no facility to address above that limit.
Cooky, your problem seem to be either a faulty board/memory slot, or simply a faulty memory, may even be a case of the board not compatiable with the memory stick like Van said.
