I'd like to know if it is possible to play divx on a stand alone dvd player and if so how?

Not possible in most cases unless you have a dvd player that can play avi such as divx5 or xvid.

That's like saying, is it possible to play MP3 on a CD Player. Well yes if it can read MP3.

And the cheapo standalones that can do this are:

Ellion DVX - 520C
Yamada DVX - 6100

Both machines cost about £80.

and kiss do a range of players as well the basic being a standalone for £80-100, up to one that has an hd and network port so you can stream media from your pc to your tv (like the xbox) via a network connection for aroun £300

Kiss use the Sigma Designs chipset though and last time I checked they just got busted for using mplayer source in their firmware without permission.

Strathfield here do an ESS based player for $180. There are also some MediaTek based players about.

get yourself a liteon dvd 2100 m8 they play almost anything
