Well most DVD movies now are DVD9's which are dual-layer discs. DVD-Rs are currently only single layer discs. So if the original is over 4.38GB (even thought the disc says 4.7GB it holds closer to 4.38GB), then it is a dual layer disc and you must rip, compress, ect. in order to get it to fit on a DVD-R.

You ask Nero to do a dvd flick then drag your media to the media window & it says whether it can use it or not.

I got all the programs I need with my writers.

At the top of the forum page is a series of guides, that should help you get started. Any file needs to be DVD compliant, and to make it into an actual DVD that can be played in a standalone player, you need authoring software to convert it to DVD standard files. Then those files can be burned, using Nero, or such.
Have a look at the files on a DVD to see what I am refering to.
