Does anyone have a preference on an external dvd writer? I am leaning towards either a Sony or Pioneer. Any feedback would help.

I have a sony drx510ul external burner it burns all formats no problems just plug it in I don`t even use the software that came with it I use dvd decrypter with ritek after about 800 + burns not one coaster.

The sony unit comes with sonic/veritas software. I've had too many problems with nero.

Either one is a good bet. Both writers are excellent. BTW you aren't the only one who has issues with Nero. ;) Recordnow Max is a great alternative.

I bought a external 5.25" drive enclosure with usb2.0 and firewire connectors on the back for $60. It is certified to work with cdrw and dvdrw drives.

Then you can purchase any internal dvd writer and install it in the enclosure.

I got my pioneer for under $100 shipped, plus the $60 enclosure...not too shabby in my opinion.

Ive heard good things about Pioneer! Im getting the Pioneer DVR 108 for around 115 after shipping!

Sony doesn't make them anymore they just rebag another manf's unit.

If you want full control, get a dvd writer & an external case & make one yourself.
