might buy one to replace my minidisc player next year, esp since its backwards compatible i.e my old minidiscs will work in it.

Great, just what the industry needs.

Another proprietary, over-priced and under-utilised hardware from Sony. :)

been trying to come up with a response for this for about 10 mins now, yet me screen is still empty

Many its because your post out samrted me, doutfull

Maby its because you correct, doutfull

Maby its because.......... well im stuck again

hold on a light has just come on inside my head !

If the ipod was the only answer or you was stuck with a MD that could only hold 320mins, you would be the first to say 'WTF is sony doing?'

so i would perfer the choice of more technology even if they are proprietary, over-priced and under-utilised :)

This is rather strange young David coming from a person who vehemently despises anything Microsoft.

BTW Dave, you can forget about cutting my hair. I wouldn't let you cut one of my pubes let alone my hair.

The thought of you and a pair of scissors makes my hair stand on end.

i dont hate MS products i hate how they go about developing them and how they ****up so much ect..........

If sony developed this and it didint work or you had to update your firmware every 2 weeks then i would be shouting it from the top of the board

You hate Microsoft because Lazza does.

It's the height of hypocrisy to complain about how bad something is and then use the latest of it's products.

And please don't tell me you don't have a choice.

As far as your point on Sony, they don't make operating systems or browsers that are used by 90% of the developed world, so they are hardly in the same category.

You use XP. Why do you use it if you don't like M$?

Where the hell did you get that from?

Sony dont make operating systems but they make hardware ect..., that are used by a lot of people. The point that i was trying to make is that no other company in the world has as many problems with their product, just because thire used by so many people its not an excuse. In fact that should be a reason to make then 100% right first time

Not likeing a company and not using their products is a different thing

I don't love all things Microsoft, but if everyone used for example, Mozilla or Opera, hackers would target them and plenty of holes would be found.

That is why Mac operating systems aren't targeted as much. No one is going to write a virus or worm that only reaches 3% of the population.

The whole idea of writing and releasing this rubbish is to gain notoriety, and they stand the best chance by going after the most popular software, namely Microsoft.

As much as I dislike Microsofts behaviour, every other company would and does act the same way to protect and gain market share.

Whomever doesn't like it can take up socialism and share and share alike. :)

Actually, the first link is a bit misleading. They mention a "whopping" 40hrs of music, but they dont mention as what bitrate. The second link mentions "encoded at 48kps"..who encodes MP3's at such a low bitrate??? That must sound awful...

their not MP3s though their a different format that can be encoded that low without much loss of quality

Whats the format called?

There is so much information being crammed into music files now, but no matter how much you lower the bitrate the quality is sure to drop regardless of intelligence/innovation.

If you look at the Sony MD range with LP4 format. MD use ATRAC3 compression (lossy compression) which is 66kbps and is recommened really for voice recording. Music at this level would be shocking!
However Sony now have ATRAC3plus - which according to Sony, have measured ATRAC3plus @ 64kbps to be equivalent to 128kbps MP3.

It really depends on what ATRAC Sony go for - is it a new innovation for this MD? I to dont think it will be great quality @ 48kbps but would like to be proved wrong!
