My sony DRU510A is on its lasts legs and I now need to get a new dvdrw. Overclockers has this one for £98.64 (inc vat), which is not that musch more than the pioneer 106.
I have can only find one online review (trustedreviews) which is very positive, but does anyone have views on it?

I would want more than one review before making a purchase. I would still take the Pioneer 106 for several reasons: 1. 8x media is quite spendy 2. The difference in burning time between 4x-8x is only 7-8 minutes MAX 3. The MSI is a new unproven writer while the 106 has been around for a while and had time to work the bugs out 4. Error rate goes up the faster the burn, wobble and such.

Looked at the board at overclockers and most people are very positive about the MSI. If you use good quality media 4x (ritek g04) you can burn it at 8x.
It does look a great drive, but the pioneer 107 comes out this month or early next month - and price looks to be around the £120 mark. And this one supports 8x for both dvd+ and dvd-, whereas the MSI is only dvd+ at 8x. And as you say MSI is new to the game whilst pioneer know what they are doing.
So I will wait a while to get the new drive.

Also there is no way that you could burn Ritek G04 media at 4x on the MSI. G04 Ritek is DVD-R. There is a different dye use for DVD+R discs (still made by Ritek).

I should not have added ritek g04 (been using dvd-r too long). It writes 8x on good quality 4x dvd-r discs.
