and the Surreal ini.file looks like this

[Settings]
Rom Path=D:\Roms\

Default 1964 Paging Mem=4
Default PJ64 Dyna Mem=16
Default PJ64 Paging Mem=4

can someone confirm this is right?
is it possible a rogue rom could cause the rom list not to load?
many thx for any help

That looks OK, but are your roms in D:\roms, or are the in D:\Surreal\roms?or even another directory, like the root or something? What does the structure of the disc look like? (Files and folders). I have been able to run surreal without any problems.

Did you unzip your roms before you put them in the roms folder?, and did you make sure their names are not illegal for the FatX, and rom list file systems. Fat X has problems with certain characters (not sure which), and I think if the roms have too many extensions, or spaces, there could be problems reading them.

Thx for that Discworld..tearing my hair out!
Don't know origin roms-it came as a package--but it might be-they are named as the examples below:
Presume format ok?
1080 Snowboarding (E) [!].v64
A Bug's Life (E) [!].v64
Aerofighter's Assault (E) [!].v64
AeroGauge (E) (M3) [!].v64
Aidyn Chronicles - The First Mage (E) [!].v64
GT 64 Championship Edition (E) [!].v64
Hercules - The Legendary Journeys (E) [!].v64
Hexen (E) [!].v64
Holy Magic Century (E) [!].v64
Hot Wheels Turbo Racing (E) [!].v64
Might give it a go shortening them-I/m running out of ideas!!!

Those all look OK. The only other thing I can think of is that you need to 'refresh' the rom list from the program. You need to put the little pointing hand over the arrow that looks like a circular shape. It is on the right side of the fisrt menu. After you push 'a' on the controller, it updates the rom list. This is a possible solution.
