Virgin San Jan 15, 2004, 11:30 PM As title, am putting together a new machine in the near future and don't require a lot of hard disk space, I'm tempted to try the 10,000 rpm WD drive (36 Gb SATA) - has anyone used one of these and noticed a performance difference?
Mr Snatcher Jan 16, 2004, 09:27 AM I heard they are loud as hell, and really not worth the money. If I can find the reveiw from a while back a will post it.
iss Jan 16, 2004, 11:15 AM Virgin San,
I havnt tried one but if you want to get one and send it to me I wil be more than happy to try it out and let you know if they are any good.:D

Is this a joke or something? I wonder why people have to make such irreverent post.

It's not worth the money. 10,000 RPG's performance isn't that greatly improve over the 7200 in term of speed. Perhaps you should buy it and test it out. If you don't like it, most store have 30 to 60 day return. Just say it's incompatible with your system. But if you have money and want to spend like 150 dollar for a 36 giger then I guess go for it.
Dave2986 Jan 16, 2004, 01:42 PM the seek times are good (as 10000RPM) but the transferal rates are rubbish
So not worth the money IMO
iss Jan 16, 2004, 03:26 PM I heard the first genration drives were loud and ran hot but the second generation of drives are supposed to be quieter and run a bit cooler.

the fact you have to ask if it's a joke or not is probably why you have to wonder why people make such posts. since you would have to have a sense of humor to understand it.
Insomniac Jan 16, 2004, 05:37 PM Save your money San.
For probably the same amount, I'd rather a couple of serial Samsungs in Raid.
All the reviews I've read state they (Raptor's) arn't any faster than conventional, and they are loud, run hot and are overpriced.
That wasn't only one review either, but several.
jeepers94 Jan 17, 2004, 12:04 AM The first generation SATA drives are not worth the extra money.I am sure the next generation will be a great improvement.I have tried the Raptor and sent it back.According to sisandra there was about a 3% performance boost over my 7200rpm ATA drive.
Insomniac Jan 17, 2004, 01:12 AM Serial drives use their potential better in a Raid configuration, and like any 'new' technology, will only improve with each standard.
Greetings, salutations, Happy Festivus, and kudos to all and sundry.http://server4.uploadit.org/files2/130104-BabyInso.jpg

Very kind iss, I'll bear that in mind ;)
Well thanks everyone, that seems pretty conclusive though I am surprised to hear someone say that all first generation SATA are not worth the money.
iss Jan 19, 2004, 01:28 PM reviews of the new 74 GB raptor are finally starting to trickle in.

Virgin San Jan 19, 2004, 06:25 PM Cheers iss, that reads quite well - performance excellent, temp and cost bad. Size not an issue for me. Actually by the time the budget is ready for another PC they should be a couple of generations down the line anyway ;)
iss Jan 19, 2004, 07:03 PM I almost went with a 74 GB raptor when I built my new rig last month. it came down to the raptor or a DVD burner. I decided I wanted the DVD burner more than I wanted the raptor.
