Seen this on SVP. Is it worth getting, or is it better to hang on for the Pioneer 107?
Thanks for your opinions.

joe2025 Jan 18, 2004, 03:35 PM Seen this on SVP. Is it worth getting, or is it better to hang on for the Pioneer 107? Thanks for your opinions. Joe. PhilEnfield Jan 18, 2004, 05:58 PM There's already a thread on this m8 Have a look here : http://www.cdrom-guide.com/cgi/Ultimate.cgi/showthread.php?s=&threadid=265929 celtic_druid Jan 19, 2004, 12:05 AM Moving this to CoOp. jesterrace777 Jan 19, 2004, 03:50 AM Tough call on that one. The NEC definitely has an attractive pricetag but it is still too new to know exactly how it will perform over a period of time. Pioneer has an excellent reputation but the 107 will also be a relatively untested burner. I have heard that the 107 will cost quite a bit, so if that is true (and provided that something doesn't come up with the NEC's in the near future then I would go with the NEC). PhilEnfield Jan 19, 2004, 06:03 AM SVP (UK) are saying that the 107 will be around £105, when they get it in stock. Personally I would be inclined to wait for it, as Pioneers are tried and tested. Having said that some folk are reporting good results with the NEC. I understand though, that the only disk at present, that will burn at 8 X, with it, is the Verbatim. Lazza Jan 19, 2004, 06:58 AM Wait for the 107 would be my advice too. In horse racing terms it comes from a tried & trusted DVDRW drive manu, name one other company that can claim that for every single DVDRW drive they've ever made? And please people don't post that the likes of Sony, NEC, LiteOn, Plextor etc have acheived this because they ain't even close! :D As regards 8X media both Infiniti & Datasafe 8X +R media HERE (http://www.xscomputertechnology.freeserve.co.uk/cat7_1.htm) don't know what dye it is though, at a guess I would think they were both CMC. jesterrace777 Jan 19, 2004, 03:18 PM CMC? No thanks. If the Pioneer is going to be that cheap than I guess it would definitely be worth it. I have heard rumors that it was going to cost $300-$400 when it first came out (probably for the A07). Anyways if the Pioneer is cheap enough, I would definitely buy it. handyguy Jan 19, 2004, 07:08 PM They are comparing them at this site: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=200549 "NEC ND-2500A: Pros: cheap (around US$120) but excellent write quality on most DVD media even at 8X, can write 4X Taiyo Yuden, Mitsubishi Chemical and Pioneer manufactured DVD-R discs at 8X, also 8X for 4X Taiyo Yuden manufactured DVD+R discs, and 6X for 4X DVD+R with the MID code of RICOHJPNR01 discs. " Pioneer: "Cons: no 8X writing on any 4X rated DVD media under current firmware version 1.05, more expensive than the NEC ND-2500A (AVILOGIC.com currently quotes $152+shipping for the OEM drive), also slower but still acceptable CD-R write speed at 24X. " gratefulme Jan 19, 2004, 11:12 PM the A07 107 are already out. here (http://www.esbuy.com/pioneerdvra07.html) is a link to them being sold. $300 for the A07, and $199 for the 107. I still think for $80 less the NEC is a better buy. Lazza Jan 20, 2004, 03:20 AM Yeah, moneywise th NEC *IS* a good deal for sure. But media compatability wise how will it compare? I get plenty of people who come to me with coaster problems and drives not burning DVDR's at correct speeds and almost never is it a Pioneer drive I have to say. In fact it is usually NEC, Plextor or Sony drives. :( jesterrace777 Jan 20, 2004, 04:26 AM Originally posted by gratefulme the A07 107 are already out. here (http://www.esbuy.com/pioneerdvra07.html) is a link to them being sold. $300 for the A07, and $199 for the 107. I would take the Pioneer over the NEC at those prices. ;) gratefulme Jan 20, 2004, 04:37 AM Originally posted by jesterrace777 What a ripoff. I almost wish I would have waited a week. gratefulme Jan 20, 2004, 04:40 AM Originally posted by Lazza Yeah, moneywise th NEC *IS* a good deal for sure. I'll find out if the cheaper media burns just as well, and report it here. Lazza Jan 20, 2004, 09:55 AM Originally posted by gratefulme I'll let you know by the end of the week. Great stuff, thanks! handyguy Jan 20, 2004, 11:29 AM If you want cheap, this is just $69 after $50 rebate at officemax.com free shipping I guess: Khypermedia 8X DVD+RW Drive Khypermedia Internal DVD+RW Drive 8X. Price shown reflects $20 instant rebate. Additional $10 Instant Rebate will be reflected on the order confirmation page. **THIS OFFER CANNOT BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH ANY OTHER COUPON OFFERS** $50 Mail-In Rebate. Mail-In Rebate Valid 1/18 - 1/24 Only! Limit 1. jesterrace777 Jan 20, 2004, 04:30 PM Yeah, but what do you want to bet that it will be like the Cendyne rebate and take you 3-4 months to get your money back. I for one am sick of dealing with Rebates. I am still waiting for a rebate on some Fujifilm CD-Rs that I purchased well over a month ago. handyguy Jan 20, 2004, 06:37 PM I don't know who the rebates are with for that one. OM is weird with rebates. jesterrace777 Jan 21, 2004, 03:14 AM Yes they are. The rebate on my Cendyne 105 took more than it's fair share of time (even though that was through Cendye and not Officemax itself). I purchsed the writer in January (last year) and recieved the rebate in mid-April  At that point it isn't even worth it. Just like the Fujifilms I am still waiting on (Although those were from Best Buy). In most cases I would rather just spend a little bit more to get a good deal online and not have to worry about getting a good deal 2-3 months after I purchased the item in question. |
