i purchased this D-link router (DI-704) from a friend. have a win98 and winxp (main pc) connected correctly for internet access. i also have zonealarm pro w/ permission from each pc's ip address. i'm able to ping each ip address. i have symantec pcanywhere program. what i want to do is have remote control of my win98 pc from my winxp pc. how am i able to do that. when i try it w/ pcanywhere and click on my win98 from "remote" it gives me a message of " unable to attach to specific device". but i can get access to the shared win98 folders. how can i get remote control of my win98 pc? any ideas? i appreciate it.

Have you checked ZoneAlarms log for any refusals. If it helps clear the log it makes and then try connecting with pcanywhere. Each program has to be allowed access and that would be my guess. Just because pinging works won't mean that any other program will. On your friends computer it would have to be confiured to accept incoming requests from your computer for example

ok- i actually do this successfully with realvnc rather than pc anywhere- i've not used pc anywhere so forgive me if what i'm gonna write isn't applicable to your situation:
First of all instead of assigning the ip addresses to be allowed individually, allow the whole home network range to be "trusted". by this i mean goto firewall->zones and "add ip range".
in my case my router assigns 192.168.2.x so start at x=1 to 255 as the lower and upper values- cos your router may be dynamically allocating the ip addresses they may change from time to time so assigning specific ip addresses when running dhcp may cause some probs.
if this is all being done from behind the router then no ports need to be forwarded.
thirdly in the case of realvnc- a "server" (realvnc server) program has to be installed on the machine you want to control remotely and a "viewer" needs to be installed on the machine you want to do the controlling from.
You don't specify whther you have installed pc anywhere on the win98 machine- i find it it difficult to believe that pc anywhere can run any machine remotely without having to have any software installed on the "remote" machine.
I'm guessing thats where your problem lies, but i would also reccomend using vnc over pcanywhere the program is tiny (the installer is like 550k) and if you are doing this all behind a router then you won't even need to mess around with making the connection more secure (which can be done using additional add on programs for vnc) and real vnc is free

Yes Pcanywhere does require the host portion to be installed on the pc to be controlled. The major advantage is it can encrypt it's data if you are using it over the 'net.
Otherwise I would recomend VNC. Much simpler to use.
If you do use pcanywhere & need to configure your firewall then it needs ports 5631 & 5632
