Tom Memphis Jan 19, 2004, 04:50 PM So do you have a problem or are you generally pondering the idea? RogueSpear Jan 19, 2004, 07:30 PM Generally pondering the idea Devil-Man Jan 19, 2004, 10:23 PM quit pondering and get a mod. save yourself the headache in the end. reliability, stability, none of those are in an exploit. Ru$$Rip Jan 20, 2004, 05:40 AM Does anyone have a link to the 'exploit ' - I havent got an Xbox but am just curious........ :) KrayzieVanh Jan 21, 2004, 10:02 AM Which 'exploit' are you guys refering to. There are a dozen out there for the XBOX. Refer to XBOX-SCENE. Check tutorials. angel12 Jan 21, 2004, 10:54 AM dont know about the "more reliable" bit I have a moded xbox and its as stable as a rock plays everything ive my son has chucked at it and hes only 5! I have to admit its wont enable you to play xbox live (at the moment) but if u want to pay someone for hardwiring your xbox and invalidate the warranty. (not to mention the extra cost involved) then go ahead me I cant see the difference plus theres all those lovely ROMS to keep you enthralled ... You pays your money and takes your choice me id go for an exploited one as more and more development is done on them the more capabilties they will have ... just MHO .. pepsik Jan 21, 2004, 12:28 PM Exploits are under development and are still sketchy, the only exploit that I feel is stable is a TSOP flash of the bios. Gives you a modchip without the hardware. Otherwise be warned, they work but only for so long. Since alot of games come with xbox live update, it can be very easy to destroy your exploit. Discwizard Jan 21, 2004, 01:25 PM If you are careful enough with the exploit, then it may be OK for you. For example, when you burn your backups, make sure to remove the dashupdate.xbe, downloader.xbe, etc files. Then you won't get the update, and even if you do, it is VERY easily re-inserted. You just have to be a little careful, and pay attention. I think the best thing to do for people wanting to somehow mod their Xbox is to try the xploit (hey-it's FREE) and see if they can be careful enough to run it without any problems. Then, if you like it the way it is, keep it that way and continue playing backups, emu's, and apps that way. Now if it seems that you cannot be careful enough with it, or you keep getting MS updates overwriting your dash, etc, then you should SURELY get a mod-chip, because investing that $50 or so will save you a bunch of trouble in the end. I have one 1.0 Xbox with a mod-chip, and I have a 1.3 with the exploit, and I will actually admit that that there is little difference between the two. They both boot every game no problems, no patching. They both get updated bios when they are released, and all apps and emus work fine. And for those that say you can't play Live with the exploit, sorry to upset you, but you can! Of course, you cannot play on Live with a backup, with or without a chip. You just FTP in to your C:\fonts folder, then backspace your hacked fonts to one-letter difference, and re-instate your factory ones. Your Xbox now functions like it did from the factory! When you are done playing on Live, simply replace your fonts, and install a backup of your old dash (2.0 dash is not exploitable) and you are set-...it takes about 30 seconds. About the only true weaknesses I have found with the exploits are the fact that with the audio hack, it gets corrupted, and the font hack can suffer the famous clock-loop (which can be avoided by not un-plugging your Xbox for more than four hours at a time). Both problems can be avoided with attention. Just like anything else pros and cons to both methods, you just gotta know what you are doing. And they lived happily ever after.............The End (Sorry about the book I wrote -haha) nimbles Jan 21, 2004, 01:36 PM Originally posted by Discwizard For example, when you burn your backups, make sure to remove the dashupdate.xbe, downloader.xbe, etc files. Was thinking of adding launch to m$ dash as a quick start option from avalaunch but now i'm connected permanently to the net it'd be a bit dangerous once i get live (i guess even if you got an old live pack- it'd eventually get updated to live 2.0 where the problem occurs right? psibob84 Jan 21, 2004, 08:18 PM whenever you connect to xblive you are usually forced to download the latest dashboard update before you can play. every so often microsoft likes to release a dashboard update that kills the current software exploits |
