I got a V1.0 Xbox with an ancient Enigma beta chip. When I try to format my F: partition in Evox, it appears to work fine. But, when I try to FTP files to it all I get is an error. I took the case off and made sure it is a 10gb Seagate drive. Evox's hddinfo also confirms this. Even Gentoox refuses to let me use the F: drive.

What I would like to know is if my Enigma beta is the problem. Is a newer chip required to use the F partition?

You answered your own question. Your chip (and thusly your BIOS) doesn't support an upgraded hard drive. And no, you can't upgrade the BIOS on your chip.

Older chips uses "E:" instead of "F:". Upgrading is a option. Modchip not HDD.

its not the fact that old modchips used e instead of f as this is a must of the xbox hdd partition system (C:system D:dvdrom E:saves X: & Y: & Z: are cache drives)
it is just the fact that the chip is so old that it does not support a bigger hd size or alternate partition method

I finally clipped the old Enigma. And, with a little help from Mr. Bond, I flashed my TSOP to X2 4981. Next I got a 200GB Seagate Barracuda from CrapUSA and a Samsung dvd from my brother's broken Xbox. With all this new hardware, its like a new machine. I especially like the in-game reset on the X2. Thanks for all the help!
