If I get a decent dvd-rom (open to suggestions) and use on the fly copy would I be able to get a successful burn?

If I am running nothing but the software and an ftp client will I get any underruns or i/o errors?

Anyone use on the fly?

If so what software and hardware do you use?

Was gonna buy a standalone duplicator but can't afford it til after missus birthday :(

Thanks for any help fellas

i dont acyually us 'on the fly' but if yuo got say a 16x dvd-rom drive and wrote @ 2x-4x on the fly it should work

make sure the reader is on a different IDE channel to the writer though

I sometimes use on the fly copying, to save time, but always make sure that I am copying from/to quality disks (i.e. Ritek G04's).
The risk with on the fly is .... if you encounter a read error - you produce a coaster, so you need to be sure that your source disks are error free.

Also to burn successfully at 4 X on the fly, you will need to configure your drives, so as the DVD-ROM and the burner are on seperate IDE Channels.

I use on the fly nearly all the time, clone dvd (write existing data) and nero, (generally 16 mins per disc) the exception is as mentioned above, using poor media produces coasters, and as pointed out the burner needs to be master on IDE2 and the reader slave on IDE 1 and of course DMA enabled on both channels :) my specs are similar to yours, I have a slower processor though xp1800 standard.

val over 2000 on the fly copys and not a prob.
even encoding playing audio or printing and d/l films all @ the same time and have the 105 and 106 and burn 2 discs @ once on the fly with n/p
but this pc was built to do that

I do it sometimes with a 2.4ghz, but really it doesn't seem to save much time.

Your reader & writer have to keep up with each other which is the tricky part.

Yup it's kinda hard to match a 16x max reader with a 4x max writer. That and for DVD9 originals you won't be able to copy on the fly anyways. I just don't bother as the amount of time saved isn't worth the potential risk. I remember back in the days when CD-RW drives were the thing to have, I had a friend with a nice writer and a great PC. He burned on the fly and about 1 in every 3 of the CD-Rs that he did for me ended up with a coaster. I will personally spend the extra 15 minutes (maximum) to read a disc to the HD. Some people get away with it just fine and others have nothing but trouble so it is a bit of a gamble.

Thanks for help guys.

Is it worth getting a 16X dvd-rom for ripping to HDD anyway? I am using my 105 to do it at the moment
