I get this all the time and it is really annoying. Basically when I try delete a file it will say something like "the file cannot be deleted because it is in use by another person or program", well I don't see how anything can be using it as I reboot my computer and still the same thing, and I really don't know how else to get rid of it.

I would appreciate any help on this

Thanks in advance

Whats the name of the file, there are a number of possible reasons.

Post it up, also take a look on google, search for "delete filename" ... the answers are out there.

Take down the filename and path and delete from a command prompt before loading your OS.

I'd make sure it's not read only first or a protected system file.

Right click it and select properties and see what is checked.

Though Google is best one, try to search our dear CDRG too. :) I found these few for you...

Try deleting the files from the Safe Mode.
You may also want to try from a Command prompt.
Make sure that you have "permission" to access or modify the files in order to delete them.
If they are running services then the processes must be terminated in order to delete them (common for trojans and virus).

Sometimes these are not the real filenames but "masked" names (common for downloaded files). If that's the case the different strategies for finding the real filenames and deleting exists.

If you are running XP then it's buggy AVI preview thumb nail shell thing can lock AVI's. Disabling it sorts out the problem.

Once again deleting from the command line should work to as long as you do it before browsing to the folder in windows.
