I'm not completely sure what makes my Tosh SD-M1212 drive so capable w/ reading DVD's using DVD Shrink that my Sony DRU-510A only gives me I/O errors, but can anyone enlighten me as to what a current replacement would be for my dying Tosh? Any info and/or assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Not to sound like the TOTAL n00b that I am, but if I purchase the model you suggested, it's a direct replacement for my current Tosh, feature for feature correct?
Thanks in advance iss

actually you will find the 1802 a bit faster. your 1212 is a 6x32X the 1802 is a 16X40X. but the important thing is it still has the same read/ripping capabilities that toshiba's are known for.

Don't you have to pick up a hacked firmware for that drive though?

there is a hacked firmware available for it which removes both the region code and allows faster ripping speeds. I have not used it since the toshiba's I am using now rip a DVD to the hard drive in 18 min on average.

By today's standards that is quite a chunk of time. My 16x Samsung SD-816 rips most discs to the HD in under 10 minutes.
