My system:
Pioneer DVDR/RW 105, LG DVDROM 16x GDR8162B (on Primary IDE)
P4 3.0Ghz HT, 1gb DDR400 Dual Channel
160gb Maxtor SATA, 120 Seagate SATA
ATI 9000 128mb AGP 4x
Intel 865 mobo

My Problem:

I recently installed an older version of CDRWIN and after I restarted I lost the use of both my DVD drives (code 39). So I searched for the code on MS knowledge base and found a registry fix that after a reboot appeared to have fixed my problem. But now Device Manager says my drives are functioning properly but when I insert any media (cd, audio, dvd, dvdr, etc) it will not autoload the media and if I double click the DVD drive it just gives an "drive not accessible, Incorrect function" error. However, if I right click the drive and go into the properties/volume menu and click the populate button I can use the drive like normal until I reboot. I can even copy with my 105.

What I've done so far:
Reinstalled both dvd drives, reinstalled both IDE channels, made sure DMA was enabled on both channels, scoured the internet for hours looking for solutions, to no avail yet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I do have a backup image from about a month ago, and I do back up my data regularly so formatting is no big deal, but I would like to find a fix if its possible more out of curiosity's sake since I've already spent more time looking than it would have taken me to reinstall windows :)

Thanks
yaz

You could do a system restore to a point before the trouble started. It would be alot easier than doing a complete re-format of your HD.

Was this the registry fix you found ? :

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;314060

If so and it didn't do the trick, as jester says try a system restore to a date prior to your installation of CDRWIN.
If the removal of CDRWIN has corrupted your registry though ... this may not work. Still worth a try though, before a reformat/reinstall.

Yes that was the regfix I tried already and it didn't work. It got rid of the yellow flags in my device manager but now this problem. System restore in my system is turned off cuz virii love to breed in there. As I said a format wouldn't be too much of a problem since I use Drive Image and store all my programs and data on different drives. The only thing on my C drive is windows itself. Mostly I just want to know now if there is a fix for it. Thanks for the suggestions though,

Try re-installing the aspi layer found here http://download.adaptec.com/software_pc/aspi/aspi_v470.exe

After installing goto device manager and uninstall both ide channels then re-boot the system, If this dosen't cure your problem then a re-install of windows is advised if thats all you have on your C drive.

Just for the record reinstalling the aspi layer didnt work either. Thanks for the attempt though, but I guess I'm just going to reload my image. If anyone knows the way to fix this I'd still love to hear it, I won't be reloading for a few days, just too busy atm, and its not like they dont work at all, just not automatically.

"System restore in my system is turned off cuz virii love to breed in there."

Thats a new one, but thats why you get a virus scanner.
