Hey All!

The other day I was asked to sort out a whole bunch of cables at the back of two computers. One is a server in a lan of 26 computers. So I unplugged everything and cleared thing s up and plugged it all back in in its correct positions. When I turned the server back "local area connection 6" (the connection that connects the server to the hub) was disabled. So thinking this had happend because I had disconnected it I re-enabled it.

I came back today to get music from one of the computers and found that the other computers can connect to each other and share files, but the server cannot be connected to. When I go to my network places on the server it only shows the server and no other computers, on the others it shows the server under network computers but cant connect to it saying network path not found. check if you have permissions. I have checked all network cables and they all seem to be in place.

The other computers have IP addresses from 172.1.16.101 - 172.1.16.126 and the server has always been 172.1.16.199. Subnet mask 255.255.0.0, the DNS server is not specified on the lan computers, but on the server is 196.36.34.2, the workgroup names are all the same.

The Server is running windows 2000pro and the others are running windows xp pro. All these computers need to be fully functional tomorrow (for printing and internet) thats why its asap.

This seems very complex to me but I'm hopeing someone will be able to help me. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks very very much,

Rikkelz

The first thing you need to do is check for lights on the nic card this will tell you whether or not there is a basic physical connection if that is OK your nect step is to ping the "server" from one of the other pcs let us know how this goesand I can help you a bit more.

Thank you for your responce!!

Tried pinging the server from one of the pcs it just says responce timed out. Cables are connected properly, lights on, the hub pics up the server but the pcs cannot connect to it.

Thanks Again,

Rikkelz

Are the machines set to static IPs or are they DHCP?

Thanks to all the responces! strangely enough the local area connection disappered from network and dial-up connections, so I tried to find the drivers (had to open up the computer to find the name of the lan card) when I put the card back in, the area connection was back and the connection was working again!!!!!!!!!

Strange, but thank you to all who helped and looked in!

Cheers ,
