well i have a 80gb hd as a slave and the other day when i clicked on it to listlen to some of my music that i have on there i kept getting this little box that said that if i want to format the disk. does anyone know how i can fix this without having to lose all my stuff?
i already try connecting the HD into another slot but still get the same thing.

Have you tried running scandisk to see if perhaps the HD has any problem areas? If you can get a copy of Norton Utilities it has a good feature that allows you to schedule a session to repair a drive.

just try to do the scandisk and it doesnt work nothing happends.

Sounds to me like the hard disk has passed on.
The only thing I can think to try would be to boot to DOS from a 95/98/ME boot disk and run scandisk from there. Possibly even try in another PC. If Scandisk won't do anything or doesn't report corrupt FAT tables or something equally as terminal, then I would accept the loss and try repartitioning and reformatting the drive.
You could also possibly try the drive in a completely different machine to see if that will read it, sounds like a gonner to me though.
