the bios he flashed with has the animation removed. reflash the chip with a non-modded xecuter bios. with the xecuter bios you will also have in game reset so you can access the evo-x menu from your controller during game play.

IGR- L+R+back+black (better for controller-s)
L+R+back+start (better for fat controller)
get xbtool and the "XBtool Color BIOS Preset Maker" from xbox scene, you can then edit the colours to what you want, keep remove the animation.
you'll need to know what bios size you require, ask your friend- infact just get him to send that bios to you and open it in xbtool and check the animation box to return the animation screen, and then flash the bios with your new bios- i'd use x flash personally but evox will do it too
ask him if there if he enabled the flash protection, if he did you may have to open up your xbox again to disable the protection

best bios is subjective- usually you fall into the evox or xecuter2 bios camps- i personally use xecuter2 4981.06 bios (for one f drive- use 0.67 if you have an f ang g drive for hd's bigger than 137gb- that have been formatted with f upto 137gb and the rest being put in g)
get a copy of x flash or edit your evox (latest version 3935) to show the flash bios option if it isn't already shown either in the main dash or in the settings section.
probably a good idea to get bioschecker too, cos that'll give you info on the current bios and what chip you are using.
depending on the chip as i said before you have to disable flash protection, which will probably require opening up the xbox.
there are several tutorials on xboxscene so check there
