Okay so I hear recording at lower speeds is better for my backups.
Can anyone reason why it's better? Does really putting at a lower speed do much anyway? Will it affect the DVDROM that reads it if recorded at a higher speed?
If there is some error output on recording what's the difference between 2x and 4x?

It all comes down to how well your PS2 copes with it. When burning at 4x the amount of wobble in the spinning of the disc as it writes goes up quite a bit. It can also be attributed to cheap media. I have a Pioneer 105 DVD-R/RW 4x burner and I do all of my backups at 4x on the 4x G04 Ritek/Ridata DVD-R discs with no problems. Most people can burn at 4x with no problems but there definitely is an issue for some and burning at higher speeds. IMO if you want to play it safe, 2x should be sufficient unless you are using really crappy media.

I wouldn't say that is true all of the time but I agree that a number of people could burn at 4x if they wanted to. The way I see it, is that 1x/2x media is starting to disappear, and writers are 4x or 8x now. You paid for a 4x/8x writer so why not see if it can burn at it's fastest speed. Even quality 4x DVD-R will run you less than $1USD a disc now, so it's not like one or two coasters are going to put you in the poor house.
