View Full Version : Question on scanning/printing image size?

I have a standard photo 7" x 5" (175 x 125mm) which I am looking to increase via a scan and a reprint on photo paper to say A4 or even A3 size.

How is the quality governed. Is it a case that the greater detail/resolution of the scanner will dictate how large I can scan without losing detail significantly. I'd looked at getting myself a scanner and was quire impressed by the Canon LIDE range. They've one which is listed as "color resolution up to 600 x 1200 dpi and up to 48-bit depth with over 281 trillion possible colors" (Model ref. LiDE 20) or a step up to the LiDE 30 which offers "up to 1200 x 2400 dpi resolution and up to 48-bit depth that delivers stunning color reproduction with more than 281 trillion possible colors".

I then hoped to resize the image in say Adobe Photoshop and print to glossy photo paper A4 or A3 size.

I was gonna get myself one of these scanners as the first step but not being too sure if this will work or not wanting to buy something which maybe isn't up to the task, I thought I'd post a query on the board to see if anyone out there could give me some guidance.

I apologise now if there's already something posted on this topic but I'm not sure whether it's a scanner issue or a printer issue. For info., I intend printing to a HP laser colour printer which can go up to A3 size.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Use a high res is best, but not much point it going any higher than your printer can print.

That is if ur gonna print it.

The printing bit is not so critical cos I'd have options where I could take it to be printed. If I was to scan on the 1200 x 2400 dpi scanner is there some rule of thumb that I could work to to work out how much I could increase the size of the image to through Adobe Photoshop and still maintain quality?
