Hi,

Hope you guys can help.
I dont know what has happened, but my cdrw (liteon) and myPioneer 106 dvrw drives have stopped working. Win xp sees them but comes up with an error code 41, saying it has found the drives but has encountered an error. If i remove the drives from device manager and reboot the same thing happens again. I have swopped the connectors from the cd/dvd to the hard drives, and the hard drives boot ok, so the connecting leads and board connectors seem ok.

Any ideas?

Thanks

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

Restart your computer.

FreakyMonkey, you saved the day. I am a new visitor experiencing a loss of an HP300 dvd drive as well as a Sony CRX215ES. Fortunately I only went as far as removing the side panel and making sure the ribbon cable was secure. Comically the troubleshooter for my hp computer tells you that you have a hardware problem and start taking everything apart. The fact that they both disappeared at the same time made me suspicious and that's how I found you. A lifesaver. Also the first time in my life that I have gone into the registry...I definitely respect all the warnings; however, FreakyMonkey your instructions were specific and clear. And, it worked. I am grateful and indebted. I really can't understand why the "big guys" give you squat for troubleshooting. The web is a wonderful thing.

They do, it's called a search engine and MICROSOFT SUPPORT (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/EN-US/).

I googled my way here and signed up for this forum specifically to post a thankyou on this thread to the freakymonkey for his advice. It worked for me. I knew that the Roxio drivers were at fault here and deleting the upper and lower filters in my reg cleared things up. Theres alot of things that the device manager just doesnt do eh? It should be called the device properties displayer with limited usefulness. This simple advice couldve been a button click away. Instead I had to read it online, and not at the microsoft website.
Anyway, I hope freaky monkey reads this and knows I really appreciate the help. Good day. :luxhello:

I'm glad it's fixed, but it's not really "Roxio's driver's" that are the culprit.

A lot of burning programs, and not just Roxio's, have a habit of screwing Window's Registry, XP's in particular.

A search on Google and/or Micro$$oft's Knowledge Base would have yielded the answer.

This problem usually occurs because people don't follow the correct procedure, and/or install too many burning programs.

Anyway, as I said, glad it's fixed, but you really need to understand the problem before you can apportion blame.

- My Story Of Roxio, The Registry Farkeruperers -

roxio do tend to stuff everything up...i had and infact still use..a Hp Combo drive...which i thought was buggered..wouldnt read dvds...or detect a cd...then i bought a pioneer 107..installed it...and it came up with an error indevice manager...and i realised both drives had this error...so i deleted the roxio crap out the registry and they worked fine...except the combo still doesnt read DVDs *laser died i think...ripping dvds to vcd all the time might do it* but it still burns cds at 40x :)

I must be a genius then.

I've used EasyCD since version 3.5, as well as many other burning programs, and I have never had a single problem.

I don't doubt a few people have problems, but the vast silent majority that never post do not.

The latest version of EasyCD is actually better than Nero, has more features, and is more stable, but you only ever read horror stories.

:luxhello: FreakyMonkey I had the same problem with the code 41 and your hotkey solution worked for me to. I came across it by googling and I was at the point of throwing my upgraded 98 to xp pro out the window, but you saved it from becoming road kill. All is well now and I too had to reinstall roxio to get my burner back on line. Thanks again. :bouncing:

Hello, FreakyMonkey. I, too, joined this forum just so I could post a thank you for your great advice. I was on the verge of reformatting after trying for over 10 hours to fix my problem. My internal CD-DVD Reader is now being recognized, and my external CD-Writer is recognized, too. :wavey:

I am truly grateful to you,

IdaPaul

Hello, I have a similar problem.

I had 'Backdoor Trojans' on this computer and since then, my computer placed my:

Samsung 48x CD-RW (Error 41)
LG DVD-ROM 16x (Failure Using The VxD Loader)
LG DVD-RAM 8X Multi Drive (Error 41)

Under *Problem Devices*

Above beside the name of the drives, I displayed the errors the System Information tells me.

I guess my computer knows these names exist, but does not display any of the drives anywhere.

I figure I have to edit my Registry, but I have never done it and don't want to risk anything.

Does anyone know how I can activate them again?
My DVD-RAM is the one I need the most at the moment.

Thanks =-)

Try uninstalling them from Device Manager, then rebooting and let Windows find and install "New Hardware".

If that fails, there is the Registry edit listed in this thread that you can try. (Assuming you are using XP)

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. MY DVD AND CDRW ARE READING CODE 41 AND CANNOT PLAY CDS ON MY PC. I TRIED UNINSTALL AND REBOOT, FINDS NEW HARDWARE BUT STILL READS CODE 41.

Then you have a Registry error, which often happens with XP.

Follow these steps outlined earlier in this thread,

Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click O.K)

Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

Quit Registry Editor.

NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software.

Restart your computer.

FreakMonkey, Thank you very much for the registry edit. You have no clue how much money that you saved me. Too bad you will never read this.

I had this problem, but it was for my display adapter on my laptop. I had good reason to believe that I had broken my Geforce FX go5700 and needed a replacement. I unstalled and reinstalled the software many times and really would never had thought that it would not have been a hardware issue.

I was already looking for replacements and they were EXPENSIVE!! I decided to search up Code 41 on ebay and noticed your registry edit for a dvd rom. I decided to go all the way up to where it says dvd and looked for display adapter instead and deleted the files that you recomended.

Rebooted and it worked since. I'll probably never post here again, just made an account to show how much I appreciated the info.

I'm sure glad I found you guys. I got a 19 error code in the "device manager", and ''problem devices" in system information says "failure using the VxD loader."
I am in reg edit right now as per previous instructions but only "lower filters" are listed, no upper. Is this a problem or should I just delete "lower" and continue?

If you or anyone still requires this information, just delete either upper and lower or both.

Whatever is there.

Windows will recreate new files when you reboot to replace them.

Hi Insomniac, like the others I have a few problems with a bum registry and my CDROM-RW, an ASUS CRW-5232AS
I dont know what happened, I had a blitz of trojans, so maybe it was one of those I dont know, but I ended up with error 41.
I was reading out your instructions for the regedit to my bro inlaw and he removed one too many entries I think.
Now it appears as the correct CDROM, but in Control Pannel/System/Device Manager/ its "Unknown".
I have removed it and it still loads as an "unknown " device, but correctly identified as the asus 5232AS.
Drivers loaded are all from sys32
cdrom.sys
imapi.sys
redbook.sys
storprop.dll
There are no upper or lower filters in the registry now at all.
I rtied to copy the reg entries here for you but they wont copy/paste, sorry.

Can you help please?
There are no drivers or Install files for the CD-RW on the web I can find, and no install or driver files from ASUS.
Cheers,
-=Ice=-

That's what I did and it worked great. Thanks
