Have I been out of the loop that long....!

Is this true dual layer drives + discs now exist...just saw one on the ony site.Their one only seems to write dual layer on + only not -

very reasonable price too.

Does pioneer have one ifso does it do + and - ...?

Am I right in saying if I had one of these ...I could do a straight back-up of any dual layer movie...after decrypting.

Thanks.

try decrypter, it does double layer. they are called double layer not Dual layer. Dual is +/-.

double layer media is about $6 per disk right now. But if you buy 100 it should be around $500.

My mistake ..."double layer"
Does the writer have to be a "double layer writer"....or can a standard dvd writer burn to double layer discs...?

Does anyone know if pioneer does one...?
Also do dvd burning packages like "recordnow" support these burners...?

Cheers.

Pioneer has one coming out in Sept. Also the media, that was the cheapo stuff, Verb double layer media is about $14 per disk.

Ok thanks for the info....(can't wait!)
I guess we'll have to wait and see if existing software packages eg, recordnow will be compatible with the new burners...?

dual layer is DVD9, but if you say Dual Format Burner, then it's -/+...

very reasonable price too.

Very true, but it's the price of the blank media that I, like others here I guess are waiting on :)

double layer writers only write double layer at 2.4x so I imagine thats more than a hour per disk.

2.4X is not more than an hour. A 2.4X dual layer writer takes just the same amount of time as a 2.4X single layer writer. I thought everyone knew this by now since the beggining of DVD writers were introduced as 2X and people were asking if a 2x DVD writer would take longer than a 2X CD writer.

whoa, it at the same price as some dvd5 burner: http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=585NKcLulMRNF4JcAJxHIo3igjN4HOoHln4=?Cat egoryName=cpu_Sony_PCAccessories_CD%2fDVDBurn_DVDB urners&ProductSKU=DRU700A&Dept=cpu

"2.4X is not more than an hour."

Sure is, remember you are doing not one but TWO disks, two layers, thus 8.4 gigs @ 2.4x takes an hour or so.

2.4X on a dual layer is equivalent to about 8X on a single layer.

They measure the speeds by the time, not the data. For example a 1X DVD-R is 1,385KB/s, where as a 1X CD-R is about 300KB/s. They both take the same amount of time even though DVD-R writers write more data faster.

Wait till one of the pep in here got their hand on the true dual layer burner then we can judge it from there...

base on what i think, it's probably less than an hour since the laser is probably burning two layer at once... would possibly be around 30 - 45min...

Jeez so much guessing and BS :)
A full 8.55 GB (=7.96 GiB) DL DVD+R will take about 45 minutes when burning at 2.4x which is the speed all double layer drives introduced now will support.
The "x" has nothing to do with the time to write a disc. For DVD: 1x = 1385 kB/s = 1353 kiB/s whether it is one or two layers.

Sonystyle 700a:

• System Requirements:
Pentium III 400 Mhz or faster (or equivalent) CPU minimum. Pentium III 800 MHz or faster (or equivalent) CPU is recommended for real time video authoring/editing, 64 MB of RAM (128 MB or more is recommended), and 1 GB of free hard disc drive space.
------
"Downside: The introduction of double-layer drives also ushers in a somber slide back to the bottom of the speed scale. The DRU-700A and the DRX-700UL will support double-layer writing on only special DVD+R DL media, and they do so at a drowsy 2.4X. The DVD+R DL discs, however, should be compatible with most set-top DVD players and DVD-ROM drives. "

It's kind of too new to determine how long it would actually take, even then it would depend on what system you did it on.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I thought that the laser in a DL burner, burned one layer, then the other, similar to the way a DVD9 disc is read

I use 2.4x media,a full disk takes me 38 minutes. on a p4 2.4ghz. So, just how would it do two times as much in another 7 minutes?

Ah, results:
"The NEC ND2510A can burn to DVD+R DL discs at 2.4-speed, which is pretty slow by today’s standards. That said, if you’re going to write 8.5GB of data, you’re probably going to make yourself a cup of coffee while you’re waiting anyway. I burned 7.9GB of data to the dual layer disc, made up of a single MPEG2 file and a DVD ISO image. It took 41 minutes and eight seconds to burn the whole 7.9GB to DVD+R DL, which is obviously a lot longer than burning two 4.7GB discs, but dual layer is more about convenience than speed.

Just came out, $98.00 cheap.

41 minutes is not alot longer than making two 4.7 Gig discs. I have burned one 4.7 Gig DVD at 2.4X and thats how long it took. Again this proves that no matter if it's a CD or DVD or double layer writer, if it's 2.4X, they all would take the same amount of time.
