Question:

Is it possible to copy data from a DVD using a CDRW (or CDROM, for that matter) drive? I recently stumbled on software claiming to do just that.

No, they use different lazers (intensity wise)

Sounds like you need some new hardware, not some software. Look for a dvd-rom if all you want to do is read the DVD, or a dvd writer if you wish to have dvd writing as well.
