how are you guys (gals)???? i have this problem and i wanted to see if anyone here could help me. I have a dell dimension 4550 with a nec nd-1100a dvd+r burner. its supposed to burn at 4x. but ever since i restore my pc back to manufactory it burns only at 2.4x
but i remember having to flash the burner to make it burn 4x when i first got the pc.
so i went on net looking for that firmware. the problem is i found and flashed the drive with the wrong firmware (a hack type made by a person and not the company), and it still burns at 2.4x.
but now i finally found the official firmware upgrade that would make it work
but since i had flashed it with that generic firmware its not letting me flash it with the real update firmware.
my question is is there anyway i can take my burner back to manufactory (before i patched with the stupid generic firmware) without restoring the entire computer????
could someone help me please????

i think that some firmware types (from memory) won't allow you to update to a firmware that has a lower number than the one you are using, so maybe if you could find a higher edition firmware, even if you have to wait a little while may be the solution to your problem.

failing that you could always email the manufacturer of your drive and ask them if there is a way to return the firmware to the manufacturers settings, but they may not help as you may have invalidated your guarentee by updating the firmware yourself, as i seem to remember that they require you to have it done only if needed and by a reputable approved repair agent/main dealer
