Odd problem with CD drive

I have an older computer with Win98 and a plain cd drive that came with it. Just recently it started to make humming noises when attempting to read a CD. Yes attempting, it makes this noise whenever you put a cd (mp3s and games) and either the computer will freeze or it'll finally stop reading and nothing will happen, and if you try to explore the drive it will freeze or say it's inaccessable. But music CD's work fine (only actual ones not burned).

Help trying to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried re-installing the driver? Right click on My Computer and choose Properties. Then go to the hardware tab and click Device Manager. Look for your cdrom drive in that list, do you see an exclamation mark there? If so, that indicates a problem. Try right clicking your drive, and choose uninstall driver. Reboot and see if Windows will pick up the drive again and reinstall the driver. If not, reinstall it from the net or look on http://www.driverguide.com/.

If this doesn't fix the problem, I'm inclined to believe it's a physical problem with the device.

What driver would that be?

Optical drives don't use nor require drivers.

Windows has had native support for all optical drives since 95b.

The only thing some drives require is ASPI to communicate with some burning software, but that's only for burning programs. It's not required for Windows itself.

Check your ASPI layer, and download the Nero Info Tool, which will also tell you the condition of your system ASPI layer."

If that is the case then why does my system error message from my cdrom r/rw say the following:
"Mitsumi CD-ROM Controller with Double Speed Drive, Device status: This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all of the drivers installed. (Code 10). Try upgrading the drivers for this device."

I have seen you post this in several different threads and I don't quite understand why you keep saying it (and why it's always in a rude manner either. Why not just offer your considerable knowledge in a nice way. Everyone on here just doesn't have the knowledge that you have.)

This particular cd-rom r/rw of mine doesn't recognize that there is a cd in it no matter what cd is put in it. It is an Acer CDRW 8x4x32 which used to work and now it doesn't know when a cd in put in it. I need help diagnosing the problem. It is on Windows ME system.

Any help from you or anyone else would be appreciated.

That's the default Windows suggestion.

Try clicking on Driver Details in Device Manager for some devices and you will also see "No Drivers are installed or required"

Because I'm sick of saying it, people like you don't believe me, and if people did a search here instead of assuming it's drivers, it would make life much easier.

I would strongly suggest that your CD-ROM drive is faulty. To check, try it in another PC system (maybe a friend?) or try another drive in your PC.
Insomnia is correct (tho a little bullish) in his insistence that CD-ROM drives per se, are not required for Windows operation as Microsoft includes CD-ROM handling routines in all Windows since Win95b. Where you do need a driver is for use under DOS, but that`s another story.

My cd-rom stopped reading cd's and it seems that my problem is the same as above, but I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me how to get the cd-rom working again. It stopped working after my failed attempt to get our old Bernoulli Drive :idea: working on the computer with is running on '98 I believe. Any help would be appreciated. (Note: getting a new cd-rom isn't an option unless I take one out of another compter we have IF it still works)
