error code 41 in device manager means that windows has loaded the drivers for the device but cant find the device.

uninstall the ide channel that the drives are on. go to device manager and open the "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" right click the channel the drives are on and choose uninstall then reboot windows should find them and reinstall them when it reboots.

Then you have a hardware problem. if windows is loading the drivers then the drives must be recognized by the bios but you can check by entering the bios and see if they are indeed listed there. if they arent listed in the bios try setting "failsafe defaults" and rebooting into windows.

have you recently installed one of the drives? make sure the jumpers are set correctly with one being master and the other slave. the only other thing I can think of is perhaps one of the drives is failing and affecting both drives.

BTW many DVD RW drives will cause problems if they are not set to master make sure the DVD RW is the master on the ide channel with the DVD rom.

Optical drives don't use drivers.

Windows has had native support for all optical drives since 95b.

Windows doesn't require an ASPI layer either. Only some burning programs do to communicate with the drive itself.

When installed and working correctly, Windows should automatically detect all optical devices and assign them the next available letter.

Check all the physical connections, then check the bios, Device Manager, and My Computer.
