M_rsa Sep 23, 2004, 11:55 AM I have just built myself a new pc and having a few probs. The thing is that i want to take one of a old hard drives out of the old pc and put it into the new one so i can have a 200gig partitioned 3 ways and then i want to take the 60gig out of my old pc and use that to store my music. I have done this and the 60 gig one is showing the bios and when i boot up but it is not showing when windows loads.
Does anyone know wot the prob might be?
thanx

SpookynessUK Sep 23, 2004, 12:08 PM Check the IDE cable as i have had similiar problems with devices not working, then i jiggled the connectors around on the IDE and it worked, or used another cable.
Also make sure you got the Master/Slave etc jumpers right.
M_rsa Sep 23, 2004, 12:43 PM I have done that a few times with no luck , i have also checked the jumper settings and they are correct.
Do you think i should try reformatting it maybe?

SpookynessUK Sep 23, 2004, 01:20 PM It wont hurt to format it, but if the drive was working before then i should work now unless of course something has gone wrong with it.
So is it 2 HD's you are putting into the PC, and have you tried putting on a different IDE Channel, as i had this problem aswell in that the master IDE would not recognise both my HD's yet the secondary will so i just put the my CD/DVD Burners on the master IDE Channel instead.

Both machines would have to be identical.
The drive must be formatted again if they are not as the drivers would be completely different.
It's no surprise it won't work.
M_rsa Sep 24, 2004, 01:54 PM i thought it would be ok as it was not the hard drive with the OS on it, well i guess i was wrong. So i should just format it?

Insomniac Sep 24, 2004, 08:07 PM Regardless of which drive had the operating system, it is still using a certain environment and resources.
It was worth a try, but yes you will have to format.

This is true, if he had windows installed (Dont think he actually stated this ?)but if it was say like my system where i have a second drive just for files i can transfer this between different PC's, this is why i offered that advice LOL
minezastella Sep 25, 2004, 03:58 PM You say you have built a new pc so I assume you have put Win Xp on it.
If the drive can be seen in BIOS but not in Windows then the following should help.
Go to Comtrol panel/administrative tools. Select Computer management, then storage, then disk management. You will see a list of the drives present. Your troublesome 60GB drive should be there. Right click on it and you will get some options. You can partition it and format it from there. Windows should then see the drive. hth
M_rsa Sep 25, 2004, 06:11 PM ok i have gone to disk management and i can now see the disk drive and it says that is it dynamic as opposed to the other disk driev that is basic, i have the option to convert it to basic. Is that what i should do?

I lived in Wavertree, just off the High Street, until a couple of months ago. I live out in Cheshire now. Lots of fresh air and much quieter! Further to walk to the pub though :(
Glad you got your disk sorted.
