My CD/DVD writer will not recognize any blank cd-r or a cd-rw. Therefore I cant burn cds.. I was burning a music cd the other night and it said some error, than it stoped burning and didnt work anymore..I burned the same cd about 3 times before because i was going to make multiple copies of this cd..I Have a new SONY DVD RW DRU-530A, that has worked since I got it 2 weeks ago. But all of a sudden it wont rocognize there is a CD-R/CD-RW in the drive, but it will recognize any other type of cd. I've tryed uninstalling the drive and reinstalling it, along with my burner programs, also updated drivers..Please Help!

I have a similar issue with my pc. though in my case I have a cd re-writer and a standard(non-writing) cd drive. Both will play audio, but not disks I have burned myself(whether audio or data). Both stopped working at the same time, and so I find it unlikely to be a hardware issue. I tried reinstalling drivers too, but that failed. I have had trouble with a GATOR program, and am told by others that this can cause problems, though my computer crashes when I attempt to delete anything related to GATOR. Try removing GStartup.lnk from startup in programs, as well as any other GATOR stuff. I was reliably informed that this would work in my case?!?! Hasn't yet, but good luck to you.

Only do the following after you have created restore point and/or backed up the Registry, and you are willing to accept the consequences.

I'm assuming you are using XP, however,

Go to Start, Run, and type in regedit and then ok.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and locate the UpperFilters value and delete it.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and locate the UpperFilters value and delete it also.

Exit and reboot. You may have to reinstall any burning software if it doesn't work properly after this.
