View Full Version : Cannot get cd/dvd drives to accept new disks

I have two disk drives and I am running Windows ME on a 700 MHz Computer with 256MB. One drive is for CD-R/W and the other a DVD + .
I had not used my CD/DVD drives for some time and now when I try, I find
neither will accept new unused disks. By that I mean whenever I put in
an unused disk of any type, something immediately implants data named
"Track01. cda" (Shown as 1 kb in size) and changes the disk to an Audio
type. When I look at the disk properties it tells me it is full! I then
find I cannot do anything with it-- I can not erase nor format, copy,
or use for data or disk copy. I just have to chuck it.
I checked on the Properties of "Track01.cda" and find it is a Read Only file dated Sunday 1 January 1995. I cannot change its Properties either.
Alterations are refused. I also note that Windows Media 9 comes up and tries to play it but then tells me it is a media that cannot be played. So, I am
completely stumped. I have a waste can full of these "corrupted"
useless disks and I cannot find the cause. The funny thing is, that
when I check the disks with either Nero or Adaptec they don't see this
file (Track01.cda) and tell me the disk is blank, yet when I try to do
anything with it, the actions always fail. Generally by telling me
there is not sufficient space on the disk. I should add that both drives happily accept disks that have been previously recorded on--cdR's and CDRW's.
I hope this story is not too confusing. It certainly is to me, and very, very strange and frustrating. (Note: I have AVG anti virus and run it every day but nothing comes up. )
Any suggestions before I rip my last remaining hair out?
Pete

Any help is very much appreciated.

I also had the same problem, I could burn disc's fine and the next day I couldn't. The burner would just write track01.cda and stop, or worse, crash. I noticed that a startup program was no longer running, disc detector named ctnotify.exe. As soon as I put it back in the startup programs everything works just as it did, and all is well. ctnotify is a program from creative labs for the sound card

The track01.cda is usually thrown up when a cd cannot be properly read. Windows assumes an audio track is present for some reason!
WMP 9 and it's DRM may be responsible as might conflicting burning software.
Older versions of Nero6 need updating after an SP2 installation.
Check your temp folders for unremovble files.
What's running under Task Manager?

CTNotify launches Creatives own autoplay feature and can be safely removed though you may have to reset autoplay settings.
