Yeh I have had this problem twice...Had a CD-Writer then it burnt out so got another one on warrenty, then a few years later it happened again but the warrenty finished so had to purchase a new one. The chances are that the dvd-r has burnt out so it will not read the media inserted into the device. Have you got a DVD-ROM that you could test the cd media itself. If not then i suggest you try another system with a dvd-rom (or otherwise) device to try and test the dvd media itself before purchasing any new dvd-r. If the media can still be found on the dvd media then the chances are that you have to purchase a new dvd/r. Generally youcan always take the device back if it still doesnt work anyway.
