ScottBob Dec 20, 2004, 11:41 PM My DVD burner (HP dvd writer dvd300i) stopped recognizing blank media, whether I use Windows XP burning utility, Nero or CloneCD to burn a disk. It ejects the disk saying "No disk in drive or disk not blank". It reads other CDs and DVDs just fine, no matter what drive or software created them. Windows XP used to pop open a window asking what to do (burn a music or data cd, use Nero, etc.), but now it doesn't even do that. The disks I'm using are from the same box of blanks I've successfully written to before, so I know it's not a media compatibility issue. Anybody else have this problem and what did you do to fix it?
Daisy_Lynn Dec 28, 2004, 05:00 PM I am also having the same problem. I have a BENQ DW1620-BK DVD+-RW 16X4X16 DUAL LAYER +R 2.4X. I am running windows xp, I tried with and without service pack 2. I am running a AMD 64 3200, with an MSI motherboard. I also have a brand new hp pavillion a650y with a hp dvd burner that is also doing the same thing. This one is also running windows xp with SP2. HELP PLEASE!

ajosin Jan 28, 2005, 02:10 PM I have seen this problem before. It seems to be common. Here are some things to tinker with (ordered by dificulty level),
1.- The DVD+/-R "standard" is not really a "standard". Not all drives recognize all brands of writable DVD's. Go to your DVD drive manufacturer website and see what brands of writable DVD's he recommends and/or update your firmware.
2.- Sometimes there might be a software glich somewhere. Uninstall all your DVD burning software (nero and roxio require special registry tools to be completely removed which can you find on their home pages or on the net), reboot, and reinstall your DVD drive driver. Reboot again and install ONE of burning software program (you can also try putting in a blank dvd before having any burning software installed to see if you get a pop-up window from windows asking what to do next). Some peole claim that there can be conflicts if you use two burning software programs at the same time (like nero+roxio).
3.- It could be a hardware hookup problem. This can be the case if your computer is new, you can read normal DVD's, and you have never tried to burn blank dvd's before. Open up your computer box and check the DVD hookups. Do you have more than one CD/DVD drive?. Which is the master/slave?. Does this mach what windows reports?. Are the IDE switches correct?. Unhook the DVD drive and other drives and redo the motherboard-drive connection yourself. Check that all the pins align how they are supposed to, etc. It is allways a good idea to have the DVD+/-R to be a master drive and to leave the other CD drives on the side while testing. If you feel unconfortable moving cables around -don't be- search the net for detailed instructions on this till you feel confortable enough to do it.
4.- Your DVD drive could be broken. Get hold of a friends computer and try to install it there. Does it work?. If it doesn't you should be able to get it replaced by the people who sold it to you.
5.- There might be a serious software or even a motherboard problem. Get a hold of a friends DVD drive that works for him and try to install it in your computer. Can you get it to work?. If you can consider replacing your DVD drive by one similar to your friends. If you can't check and recheck your botherboard settings and try swiching out the IDE cables with your friends. Condider upgrading your motherboard BIOS (this may void your waranty) or even reinstalling windows (backup your data first!).
Hope that helps. Be carefull with these steps and make sure you know what you are doing. Good luck.
Circe Jan 31, 2005, 11:02 PM I have the same problem. My CD drive does every thing except burn CD's. When it was first installed it worked fine, than it stopped recognizing that there was a blank disk in the drive and would ask for one to be inserted and would not believe that I did indeed put one in! So I tried a bunch of stuff, I saved the driver files to my hard drive, my friend told me I could delete and reinstall them off the hard drive but I was leery of doing this so on impulse I sprayed some of that caned air into the drive and than it started working. I don't know if it was the sprayed air or something else I did. So now, about a month later, I go to burn something and much to my dismay, it is doing this again! Of course first I try the spray air thing but not helping. I see the suggestions by ajosin here in this thread but I'm not sure how they would apply to a problem that seems to come and go. If anyone comes up with the solution please post as this is really frustrating since I know the burner CAN work!
Daisy_Lynn Feb 08, 2005, 01:40 PM For those of u that have a DVD burner and a CD burner. If the two drives are hooked up to the same cable. Unplug the CD burner, and it should work. If u have a SATA hard drive u can hook up the DVD burner and the CD burner on seperate cables and it should work. From what i can tell windows kinda gets confused, even if u have one hooked up as master and the other as slave.
Hope that helps some of u

Be very careful with compressed air blowers. Some of these are too powerful and can blow components apart!
Get yourself a cd cleaning disk, preferably a liquid type. That should sort your problems.
cstoro Feb 14, 2005, 11:27 AM Insert blank dvd-r and click on the drive properties and it says 0 bytes. The drive description also changes from DVD-RW Drive (E:) to CD Drive (E:) Pinnacle thinks the drive is empty and tells me to insert a blank dvd. Bottom line... I can't burn dvd anymore!
When I double click on the E: drive it pops up a warning box and says
“E:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function.”
What’s interesting is at the top of the window it says D:\ like it thinks the E drive is the D drive. Windows XP is confused!
Debug: Burned two home movies to dvd-r (same lot of dvds) the day before. Worked great. I have a Toshiba SD-R5112 (Mad Dog 4X burner). I also have an NEC DV-5800A dvd player that came with my Dell desktop (running XP pro). I think this is a software issue because both of my drives no longer recognize the blank dvds. Inserting cd-r media works great... it recognizes the cd's as being empty and ready to burn to. Both drives still play DVD movies including ones I've burned.
What I tried this weekend.
1. Started in safe mode. Uninstalled the dvd drives. Shut down. Swapped them. Set one as master one as slave (where before they were cable select). This did nothing.
2. Tried Microsoft's CD-R fix (MSFT article 316529). This also did nothing.
3. Disabled IMAPI CD burning
4. Reloaded Pinnacle Video editing software... and the dvd decoder. Still no success.
Anyone else have suggestions??? Thanks.

Daschitznit Apr 02, 2005, 09:08 AM :suspic: Same problem.
Used to burn, now it doesn't see a blank.
Tried different media,
Uninstall & Reinstall drivers,
Uninstalled all new software,
Restored Windows to a date that I knew it worked,
The drive works for playback of all media, just doesn't recognize blanks when burning.
Made sure IMAPI & other burning services were running,
Opened case & made sure cable was secure.
Did I miss anything?
Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Leopold Apr 14, 2005, 09:02 PM Hi everybody,
I ran into this problem just this morning on a client's workstation running XP Pro SP1. He was getting the informative and helpful error dialog "R:\ is not accessible. Incorrect Function" when trying to burn to a DVD-RW. Here's what solved the problem:
Right-click the misbehaving CD drive in "My Computer" and click "Properties".
check "Enable CD recording for this drive" on the "Recording" tab.
Good luck,
Leopold

flyingvet Apr 19, 2005, 09:15 PM I've got the same error - DVD RW stopped recognising any blank media, but will see and play any recorded stuff (even if recorded onto a CDR or CDRW).
I followed Leopold's advice:-
1. Right click the CD/DVD drive
2. Choose Properties
3. Uncheck the "enable recording" box if it is already checked and "Apply"
4. Recheck the box and "Apply"
This worked for me to be able to burn CDRs and CDRWs but Win XP thinks a DVDRW is a CDRW and only allows me to place 700Mb on it - this may be a driver problem? Any further advice on this will be much appreciated
Cheers Mark :cheers:
Leopold Apr 26, 2005, 12:41 AM Windows doesn't ship with built-in DVD recording capabilities, as mentioned in this article:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/moviemaker/expert/jones_02november25.mspx
You need third-party software to burn DVDs in Windows. This important fact is not explicitly stated anywhere in Windows documentation (correct me if I'm wrong), which has caused lots of user confusion and many support calls.
Here's a freeware app that can burn DVD+R/RW's and DVD-R/RW's:

Happy burning everyone :)
Mr Mackey May 16, 2005, 12:39 PM I have had this problem with EVERY cd burner used in Windows. The problem is Windows AND 3rd party SOFTWARE. ie realplayer, Nero, Roxio.
When you first set up windows it has built in burning software, drag and drop. This will come up when you enter a blank disk and ask you what you want to do, its not great but its a whole lot better than it not working.
*When you install 3rd party software it takes over this function. Even realplayer will take over this function because they also have cd burning capabilities. The problem you have is to find this .dll in your systems folder and kill that little *******.
Remember each cd burning software will have this .dll and they all take over the last one, so you will need to delete it then install whatever software you use to burn with. And remember realplayer because that one took me about a month to figure out it was from that.
*Check your media players. If they are able to burn cd's, they might be the culprit. Just try and burn one using that software. If it works then thats the little ****er that is making your life hell.
Microsoft, I think, is aware of the problem and they have an
Adaptec Writing plug-in, that is supposed to fix the problem and let Windows recognize your blank cd's but I dont know if it works.
I hope this helps you get on the right track.
This is not a *rant this is a *rave.

ooshak Jan 09, 2007, 06:45 AM I myself encountered this problem two days ago. DVDRW would read cds/dvds, but wouldn't read/recognise blank cd. The drive, once the cd inserted, would change the name from dvd writer to cd player. And of course no possibility to write anything, an error would pop out.
I combined ideas from different forums and understood that video editing/burning software sometimes changes the way the cd is recognised by the system. This option can be changed from the setting of the specific program. In my case it was Roxio -with its drag-to-disc. I opened menu and found sth like "see cd as full sth" (I'm not at home now, cannot qoute). I am sure that if you search the software you are using, you will also find cd option (like recognising only cd-r) and be able to modify it.
The thing is that many people understand that the software causes the problem and uninstall it, while this option is kept in the system, so even if you uninstalled, you have to install it again to be able to change it. I did it with the drag-to-disc and it works now. Other stuff doesn't work, but this is a different subject (or maybe it isn't? :disturb: )

DKRand Jan 27, 2007, 01:35 PM I think this thread has almost come full circle...however, I haven't yet found that magical golden ticket. :confused: The first e-mail in this thread suggested that their DVD+/-RW drive mysteriously stopped recognizing blank cd-r's when they were in the tray. From there, this thread splintered into a couple of different directions. I'd love to hear from someone who had this exact problem and what the solution was. I've tried all suggestions (except for reinstalling SP2) to no avail.
I have a home-made Athlon 4000+ on a MSNV-939 mobo. My DVD recorder is an internal Micro Advantage model 8DVDRW-B13. All of my firmware suggests it's from Microsoft (7/1/2001 ver 5.1.yadda, yadda, yadda).
My problem mirrors the original poster's problem. Everything was functioning perfectly. I could read/write CD-R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW using Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6. Seemingly out of nowhere, after burning a DVD, I tried to burn a CD and my Micro Advantage couldn't recognize the blank CD-R disk anymore. For grins, I put in a blank DVD+R and it recognized it just fine. Thinking it was the Roxio software, I tried to recognize a blank CD-R with "Windows Media Player v10"...no dice. Same result.
So...I've done the Regedit thing (making sure I have a drive type of "2", and allowing my system to rebuild my upper and lower filters). I've done the "My Computer" drive properties thing. I've unchecked/rechecked the "Enable recording for this drive" radio button. I've purchased different blank CD-R's. I've reduced the recording speed to 8x.
I know what you're saying...What about your firmware? When I did the "Live Update" for my DVD burner, it said it identified and updated the latest drivers, but none of my driver properties appeared to change.
This leaves me with three possible solutions.
1st - Buy a new DVDRW. Easy enough
2nd - Make sure the newest firmware is installed and functioning on my system.
3rd - Try to deinstall/reinstall service pack 2.
I'm going to start with option #2 and track my progress through this thread.
Of course, if anyone has some tidbits that I may have missed, I'd love to hear them.
Thanks,
-DKRand-
chandler68 Jan 28, 2007, 07:29 PM First test that your drive IS faulty, by trying it in another computer.
No point buying a new one if it IS ok as the new one will still have the same problem when fitted.
The main thing to try is a format of C drive and a fresh install of the operating system you use.
colin.
DKRand Jan 30, 2007, 11:24 AM I was having difficulty identifying whether or not the updated drivers were actually being used. Everything was still suggesting Microsoft's default drivers were still installed.
So, I found a good deal on a Mad Dog DVD+-RW burner. It's a decent midrange burner. After all of the rebates, it'll cost about $40.
I'm going to put the Micro-Advantage burner in my other computer tonight. I'll let you know if that works out or not.
Oh...Chandler68, I don't have the heart to rebuild the OS on this box. I literally just put it all back together (new mobo, processor and IDE cables) about a month ago. Call me lazy. If my "old" burner works in the other computer, that'll be ok. It doesn't have a burner in it anyway.
-DKRand-
DKRand Jan 31, 2007, 01:57 PM Ok. In a word...or two, "It's broke". I installed my new dvd burner and all is well. I put the old burner in my other computer and the problem still exists.
So...I think I can conclude that the drive itself is broken. Oh well...on to the next challenge.

Katt Feb 19, 2007, 11:01 AM Hello,
I too, have this same problem. I have figured it out that it has something to do with 3rd party software because this is the 2nd time this has happened to me. And I noticed both times it started doing it after I had installed and uninstalled Nero. I do have Roxio,WMP11, MusicMatch Jukebox, and one called Creator. WMP11 and my MusicMatch Jukebox doesnt recognize the blank cd but the other two programs do. I saw the reply about getting rid of the .dll file could anyone elaborate on which .dll file(s) to delete? It would so make my day since I've been battling this problem for quite some time.
Thanks alot in advance. Katt

I only jumped in to correct something, and don't intend to contribute to this thread as it has been hijacked and dragged up from the dead.
Anyway, "enable recording" as instructed simply lets you use XP's built-in packet writing ability. (which uses a Roxio plug-in)
It has NO effect on other burning programs, which is the problem the majority here are encountering.
It also has nothing to do with SP2 as suggested, nor can you update your CD/DVD Rom drivers.
Windows has native support and no other drivers are required or available.
Squidboy Feb 20, 2007, 08:37 PM The problem is with XP's auto run function.
Sometimes it gets corrupted.
Use this microsoft progie to fix it.

I dont understand the tone of this previous message. I found this forum looking for a solution to my problem. I thought that's what the forums were for, to talk to each other, help each other, and hopefully find solutions.
Obviously the thread was not dead because there are several of us left with this problem that the thread had not answered our questions as of yet.
But thanks to SquidMan, I did find a solution to my problem. It was a 3rd party problem, and the culprit was my Nero software. I had installed it and then uninstalled it and that's when my problem arose. Sometimes when you uninstall programs there is a bunch of stuff left in your registry, which was my problem. If one is not techie enough to know how to edit the registry (then please dont try!), then you would never know how to get rid of it. But I figured out or took a guess which program was causing my problem and went to their website, (Nero), checked out their "support" and found a download to make a "clean uninstall" of their program, and whala my problems are solved. So, try backstepping to what occured before your problem arose and go from there, if it was a program, go to the manufacturer's website and do some researching. Good luck. I would say this thread has officially risen from the dead and I hope it helps someone like it helped me.
Katt :luxhello:
Insomniac Feb 24, 2007, 03:55 PM I dont understand the tone of this previous message. I found this forum looking for a solution to my problem. I thought that's what the forums were for, to talk to each other, help each other, and hopefully find solutions.
Then I'll explain.
The thread is over 2 YRS old, and should be left to die in peace.
If you have a similar problem, by all means search forums and read old posts, then if you still need help, start a new thread.
The reason I and others didn't bother to help you is because people don't want to read through paqes of old posts, not to mention it's simply bad manners to hijack a thread.
You weren't the original poster, so either offer help if the thread is current, or don't post on it.
Would you like it if you posted a question and others didn't offer solutions, but merely added their problems?
If everyone dragged up old threads, forums would be a mess, and most admin simply lock old threads that are posted on.
Had you read the posts on this thread correctly, you would have had your answer.
Several members stated to remove all burning software, but you obviously missed that in your haste to hijack.
And as far as Nero is concerned, it's very hard to remove.
Ahead have a "Nero Clean Tool" on their site to completely uninstall it.
Katt Mar 02, 2007, 11:06 AM Okay, when I joined this thread, the last response was from Jan 2007. I did not hijack it. I merely joined in. And there were people helping and answering otherwise I would not have bothered. Also, forums seem to get upset when you start a new thread when there is already a thread on the same problem or questions. You always get the something like "if you would have researched the forum you would have found a thread already on this subject".
Fortunately I did resolve my problem. As I stated I went to the Nero site and downloaded their "clean uninstall" and it took care of my problem.
I wont be back to this forum. So you do not need to leave me another "nasty" and "rude" response like we're all idiots, because you will be the only one reading it, because nobody reads threads over 2 years old right?
Insomniac Mar 02, 2007, 03:38 PM the last response was from Jan 2007
I didn't say you were the only hijacker on this thread.
If you see an idiot breaking the law, is it morally and legally OK for you to do the same because others are doing it?
Herd mentality might be fine for sheep, but it's not always smart.
You obviously have no idea on how forums work or internet etiquette.
And if you don't like being treated like an idiot, then don't portray yourself as one.
As far as not coming back to this place, you wouldn't have anyway, and it's no great loss.
Noobs like you are a dime a dozen.
You only come here to get what you want, don't contribute, break rules then try to justify it.
And that's if you even bother sticking around for long enough after getting what you want.
Black Panther Feb 26, 2008, 10:34 AM Hi everyone. This is my first post in this forum. I have been battling this problem for a couple of months now to no avail. (I hope that it is OK for me to post in this thread...)
I've done all the solutions in this thread, plus more... and I still cannot get my optical drive to burn :bawling:
I assembled this pc myself last year. Overclocked the E4300 to a stable 3.2Ghz on zalman 9500 cooler, and now I keep it at 3Ghz for day to day use.
My computer specs are:
Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E4300 1.8Ghz OC'd to 3.0Ghz
Motherboard: ASUS P5B
Memory: 2x1024MB Elixir DDR2-833 5-5-5-15
Video Card: BFG 8800 GT OC2 512MB DDR3 @ 729 core/ 1808 shader/ 2074 memory
Harddisk: 250GB Seagate Barracuda 7200 SATA-2 16MB Cache
CD/DVD Drive: LG GSA-H44N DVD±RW/±R/RAM
Sound Card: X-Fi XtremeMusic 7.1,
DVD & CD burning hadn't been the first thing on my list I admit. I had a couple of 3-year old blank cd's way back then, and when I tried to burn on them just to check if it worked, I blamed it on the old disks and didn't worry that the problem could have been elsewhere.
Here's a link for the complete specs of my drive showing what it should do: http://uk.lge.com/products/model/det...gsah44n.jhtml#
Well, now I've discovered that the problem hadn't been the disks. No matter what brand I buy, what speed they support or whether they are cd-r, types of dvd-r or re-writers, the burn function doesn't work. In fact when I insert a blank disk, my computer reads it as being full:

(you can see here that I've got only 3 tabs showing, the 'recording' tab isn't there).
and if I try to double click on it it says "not accessible":

I've never had any problem with reading though. I can play all types of movies, music cd's, game cd's and game dvd's including TS2, Oblivion + all EP's and Crysis...
Now I'm sure that it isn't a problem with the DVD drive physically. I swapped the DVD drive with an identical one from another computer, and guess what? My drive burns perfectly in the other pc, and the other drive gives me the same errors in my pc!
Here is the stuff I've done so far, which hasn't solved the problem:
1) Updated the drivers for the DVD Rom and the IDE drivers;
2) Swapped DVD drive with that from another pc;
3) Updated the firmware;
4) Checked the bios controlling that it is in IDE mode;
5) Tried a different IDE slot;
6) Tried a new IDE cable;
7) Removed SecuRom and Starforce from the registry and from the device manager;
8) Underclocked cpu, ram and gfx to stock clocks;
9) Re-installed Windows XP through Windows Repair;
10) Modified the registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives\Volume{bc1eb9fa-d7ec-11dc-9722-806d6172696f} to read 2 instead of 3 which now gave me the recording tab, and brought me a step forward in that now I can access the disk (it's no longer not accessible) but I still cannot burn on any disk:

11) I ran Microsoft Windows Autofix (Autoplay repair wizard) which said the following:
AutoFix [V5.2.3790.67]

Step: No steps to take.
Result: This AutoPlay setting cannot be fixed. Either the device is malfunctioning, or the wizard cannot determine the problem.
>> Required action: The wizard found problems but cannot fix them -> None
As you can see it saw a problem but it cannot fix it.
I don't know what else I can add, the computer is virus and spy-ware free, my XP is a legal copy, and I don't have much stuff installed which might be causing a conflict or mucked something up. After all as I pointed out earlier, this problem had been there from the start when I assembled the pieces and installed XP fresh straight from the box...
I've gone dizzy myself trying to remedy the problem for the past month or so.:uhwell:
Any ideas?
Thanks a lot.

solus Jan 17, 2009, 10:23 PM I have read this thread from front to back and tried all the ideas for fixing my problem.... None have worked.. Now just to explain I do not give a rats left butt-cheek if I am called a hijacker or whatever your opinion means nothing to me. I will not be back to this forum and I will not forget to mention in other forums I do contribute to not to use this one as the tone and manners of the admins is pathetic..... We are talking about 100's of dollars of machinery here and the whiners about who posted and when is a joke
SEE YA
Byronik Mar 02, 2009, 10:29 PM I had to go into the registry and change the drive type from a 3 to a 2, following Microsoft's instructions at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316529
But this didn't entirely clear up the issue until I installed this:
http://www.mediacodec.org/WECPSetup.exe
The application deleted some dodgy files that had probably been installed by various DVD converters. Everything's fine and dandy now.
